Documentary Filmmaking
A Community Grows
The Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market, Tuesday Market, brings together small farms and local vendors for a relaxed, hometown shopping experience. From fresh produce to handmade lemonade, it’s a place where community and craftsmanship meet. Shot by Lilly Essex from Carroll High School for HSJI at Indiana University.
Lennie’s: Where Flavor Feels Like Home
I created this documentary because when I asked a counselor “Where should I go eat”, their first answer was Lennie’s. After jumping through some hoops in pre production, to finally interviewing manager Devin Fisher, and owner Michael Fox, was a true experience. After the move in 2021 from 10th street, to Indiana University’s very own Kirkwood Avenue, Lennie’s is still innovating and definitely bringing the vibes to Kirkwood.
Bloomington’s Tuesday Market: Reconnecting the Community
Bloomington’s Tuesday market brings people together for one purpose, to buy things. But thats not all this market does. This market unites the community and allows people from all over the U.S. to bond over their shared love for fresh produce to refreshing drinks. Shot by Jessica Salerno from Lake Central High School.
Buff-A-Louie’s – Serving Wings and Things for Nearly 40 Years
Buff-A-Louie’s is a staple local business of Bloomington, Indiana. It was started in 1987, and is currently owned by Ed Schwartzman. Both Schwartzman and staff member Tyson Gregory were interviewed in this documentary. They shared what Buff-A-Louie’s means to the people of Bloomington.
Creative Connections – Art in the Age of AI
AI is a contentious topic for creatives in 2025, so when prompted to create a documentary, I wanted to both spotlight one of IU’s gems, Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art, and get the opinions of both professionals and passerby on AI art. My partner (Reah Frydrych) and I reached out to the museum’s media director and was fortunately able to set up an interview with Keaton Evans-Black, the Arts-based Wellness Experiences Manager. With the assistance of museum visitors, I was able to fully explore different perspectives on what art means to people, what constitutes art, and why art will continue to connect with people in the future.
BuffaLouie’s and the Fight to Keep Bloomington Local
I wanted to highlight the story of local businesses on Kirkwood and their competition with chains. What I found was a deep connection with Buffalouies and IU. They have cemented a place within the culture of IU and will not be leaving for a long time.
The Other Side of the Coin: Get to Know the Employees of IU
This mini documentary highlights that benefits as well as the community that is formed by being an employee at Indiana University. Showcasing both a current student-worker and a graduate that continues to support IU through hospitality and service. We delve into the “why” and “how” of the people on the other side of the counter. As they are the others that make campus life thrive for every student that walks through the cmapus gates.
Working at IU- A Mini Doc
Abe Brown, a documentary production student from Bloomington High School South attending HSJI, chose to focus his project on student workers who remain on campus over the summer instead of traveling or spending time with family. He and his partner aimed to capture a broad range of experiences by interviewing one student working at Starbucks and another at a hotel, both connected to Indiana University. They asked each subject the same set of questions, collected supporting B-roll footage, and edited the documentary using Adobe Premiere Pro.
