In the midst of flashing lights, 17-year-old Zoey Duchene shines brightest. Whether it’s through theater, film making, French club, art club, or photography, Duchene has an obvious passion and talent when it comes to the arts. “There’s a bunch of small things that shape who I am,” Duchene said. She has found many ways to incorporate her interests into her everyday life. Yet in the midst of such talent, Duchene’s photography takes the cake.

Jahnavi Avula, upcoming Junior, Embraces Heritage through Indian Classical Dance

Jahnavi’s passion for Indian classical dance blossomed at the age of seven. However, her family’s decision to move to the United States when she was nine brought an unexpected pause to her dancing journey. Despite the excitement of starting anew, Jahnavi couldn’t help but feel a sense of melancholy without her beloved art form.
“I used to reminisce, when I saw pictures of myself dancing,” she said.
Yearning to reconnect with her cultural heritage, Jahnavi found solace and inspiration in classical Indian dance once again. After four years in the United States, she was able to resume her practice, thanks to finding a new teacher who reignited her passion.

Isabella Roberts expresses her dreams to be a writer and who has influenced her passion.
Starting out with violin, rising senior Isabella Roberts has a passion for music which she hopes to continue into the future. Isabella’s love of music is largely driven by her father as is her love of writing.
“My dad collects records, he’s played the guitar for me my whole life, so I just kind of grew up in that.” Isabella said, followed by, “My dad is also a writer, basically he influenced my whole life. He wrote short stories, but I’ve wanted to be an author since like second grade. I’ve obviously adapted.”

Bethany Brown. A 16 year old at Avon High school in Avon, Indiana is taking three AP classes, an extra credit college course class, and is one of five section editors for her school’s yearbook. “I really wanted to push myself for my junior year. I don’t think I’ve really processed the amount of work I am going to have this year, but I feel confident that I will be able to push through it and make the most of my junior year.” said Brown.

Emerson Zuranski puts herself out there so she can achieve her goals.
Not everyone is gifted with an extroverted personality, but when it comes naturally for someone it can bring benefits along with it. Luckily for Emerson Zuranski, a senior yearbook editor at Avon High School, her outgoing personality helps her pursue her passions. Zuranski has been a four year member of choir and a three year member of yearbook. While searching for a story or singing a song may seem vastly different on the surface, they actually both have one thing in common; they require Zuranski to step outside of her comfort zone.

Upcoming Senior Katherine Jackson, who goes to Martinsville High School in Indiana, the future was the highlighted topic, ranging from publications, teachers, and her struggles and her successes. Publications, having an idea about what she wants, her struggles and her math teachers have pushed her to be the best that she can be and to help her shape her future.
When asked about what Katherine saw in her future Jackson explains, “Marketing at Notre Dame, is [her] dream.” Then she goes on to explain that publications and photography pushed her into wanting to show a story versus telling it, which led her to the marketing landscape.

Drew Nesbit joins her school’s yearbook team after her older sister leads by example
Everyone always has someone to look up to. Someone that is an influencer or is just an important person in their life. For Drew Nesbit, a 17-year-old student from Martinsville Indiana, that person is her older sister. Her sister Piper has always been a role model. When Piper was in high school, she joined the yearbook staff, which encouraged Drew to also join the yearbook team.
For Drew, her older sister has always been an inspiration.
“She was class president, and she was just all these good things,” Drew said. “And that’s who I want to be.”

Rising senior Greta Powell feels her friends compliment her personality and teach her more about herself than she realized as well as help her become a better and more genuine person. Growing up with movies like Freaky Friday and Cheetah Girls inspired Jael Davis to pursue music and start her own band.
Ever since Junior Jael Davis was little, she was around music. Her mom, brother, and grandma were singers, and her grandma even sang backup for Billie Holiday. “We’re just like a very music oriented family, but I didn’t really start getting into it until Disney Channel,” Davis said.
Cheetah Girls really opened the eyes of young Davis. She said “I love the style, I love the fashion, and I love singing. Morgan Jones’s self-expression journey through show choir performances.
For senior Morgan Jones, the “C” in choir stands for confidence. Self-expression and the feeling of comfort in one’s own self were foreign and a struggle for Jones. She felt that she could not fit in anywhere or with anyone, she felt distant from all her peers. However, starting the show choir helped her find her confidence and the place she belonged and flourished in.
“[Choir] taught me it is okay to mess up,” said Jones. “When I first joined the show choir I wasn’t confident at all, however, it taught me how to be confident in myself.”
