Indiana University’s Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC) — It doesn’t have just physical benefits

The Student Recreational Sports Center, arguably the most daunting building on Indiana University’s campus, has a wholesome environment with a multitude of benefits. The physical benefits of a recreational center are well-known, but the mental benefits clearly manifest in student life as well.

Students often feel stressed because of the workload that comes with being a student. The SRSC is a place where that negative energy can be released in a healthy manner. Upcoming IU junior Alex Schlatter spends a substantial amount of time at the SRSC. The center plays an important part in his life, as he not only goes there to work out but also attends as an employee. With the stress of the school year, the center is a wonderful escape. Schlatter confided, “I just need a break away from, like, the dorm life or anything like that, from the books. So I come here to the rec center.”

Even those who don’t attend IU, prompted by the stress of work or the upcoming school year, may find themselves at the SRSC. Another frequenter of the rec center, Sophia Sakakibara-Capello, University of Central Florida senior, comes to the rec while visiting Bloomington. Since her work week can be stressful, she often uses the SRSC as an outlet.

“When I come after work, I feel like I decompress.” — Sakakibara-Capello

During the summer, the rec center can still be a remarkable opportunity for self-care. The SRSC can serve as a confidence boost to start the day, or a wind-down to end the day. Sakakibara-Capello explained that, “Since I’ve been working forty hours per week, coming here in the mornings makes me feel good about myself.”

Student rec centers are an excellent way to build community. At Indiana’s SRSC, students can be seen with friends playing a match at one of the courts or chatting between sets at the weight room. It is a place you can enjoy either in a group or individually. As Schlatter said, there is much to offer, so anyone can find an activity they enjoy.

The SRSC is an essential part of the lives of those at Indiana University. The rec center underwent renovations last summer and is currently getting updates. This effort is very worth it, as Indiana University’s state-of-the-art facility gives students plenty of opportunities for decompression. The rec center is an expansive place with many different courts to choose from, such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, and more. Students could get a rigorous workout in the weight room or relax at the wellness center. Regardless of their choice, the SRSC is a haven from the stressful world outside.
