Growing the flow arts community in Bloomington

Cayla Shank, a 21-year-old from Carmel, enjoys spending her warm afternoons outside hula hooping as a break from stresses in her life. She and others such as, Jaclyn Flint from the Hudsucker Posse enjoy using flow arts to get away from the world.

“We are a community,” she says. “We’re here to teach each other. There’s people who can walk in off the street and can teach us something brand new that we’ve never thought of before.”

21-year-old Ethan White opens Rush Bowls

Ethan White, a 21-year-old IU alumnus, sits at his computer to work in the back of his smoothie-bowl business with the white-noise of blenders and pop music blaring in the background. Staying focused on his work, he senses there is a demand for a new healthy food option in the Bloomington area for those with dietary restrictions and organic lifestyles. White aspires to create a business with a friendly atmosphere that people would be running back to.

“It’s been really exciting,” he says. “We’ve seen a lot of people coming back in, which is probably the more exciting part. Once people come in, they’re looking forward to coming back.”

I’m focusing on health and fitness and interviewed around 10 subjects, but I was only able to find a few individuals who were interested in working out.

Bloomington Residents discuss health and fitness

Health and fitness are essential, according to Bloomington residents interviewed on Thursday, Feb. 14, near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street. 

Sara Rutkowski, 20, of Charlestown, does a variety of workouts, typically in group settings or one-on-one with an instructor. Some of the gyms she enjoys are 9Round and Orangetheory Fitness.

“My big in my sorority, she teaches kickboxing at 9Round,” she says. “She like has bags at her house, so like once week we get together and I kickbox with her.”

Claire Curry
Claire Curry is a junior at Indiana University majoring in journalism with a concentration in photojournalism. She is also interested in fine arts, specifically photography. Claire has previously interned with two photography businesses with Casalini Portraits and Nathaniel Edmunds Photography Studio. In her free time, she enjoys photography, working out and hiking. Claire is involved with her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi as well. She’s from central Indiana, but has always enjoyed traveling. Claire has visited England, Mexico and Iceland with plans to visit France and Australia in the near future. Her dream job is to work for National Geographic to combine her passion for traveling and photography.
