Covid-19 makes reporting a challenge

March 25th, 2021 by

The Covid-19 pandemic makes reporting more of a challenge during the pandemic. There is always the risk of not finding the right person to interview for a story or catching COVID while reporting.

Interviewing strangers always brings the risk of meeting someone who has the disease. I run the risk of catching the disease while having an underlying health condition.

Being a Type 1 diabetic, the risk for greater complications from the disease is very possible for me and that risk is always in my mind while I am interviewing people. One good thing about my location for interviews is that I am in a college town and my subjects are mostly college students.

The students here have been great with battling this pandemic and staying safe which brings more peace to my mind, I know that I can go out and interview people safely.

Finding people to interview can be more of a challenge during these times. Not as many students are on campus due to many classes being moved to online only to limit groups in small spaces.

This makes it hard to find multiple people to interview for a project. Most students are very helpful and willing to do the interview for the project and do a great job of keeping social distance while the interview is being done.

The students I did get to interview gave very good answers and took pride in doing the interview.

It was interesting to find people to interview with the lack of people on campus. This forced me to get out of my comfort zone a little more and talk to people that I just walk by on the streets.

This is another issue that I dealt with while doing this project as talking to strangers and try to interview them for something makes me very nervous.

Luckily, the students I did ask to do the interview were very helpful and easy going for the interview. This calmed me down a lot while working these interviews.

Covid-19 has created a lot of new challenges for reporters while the pandemic has continued. For me, the biggest challenge was being safe given my health conditions, but the students that I saw while doing the interviews helped make me realize that a lot of students do care about being safe while going out into the community.

The experienced gained while reporting during the pandemic helped me and many other reporters gain new ideas of what to do for an interview and will make reporters’ lives and jobs different and more interesting even once the pandemic ends.
