Action – a student is seen riding a bike on N Woodlawn Ave. I chose this photo to represent action because you can see the student working hard to go uphill. Credit: Samantha Smith
Moment – A student is seen sitting on a bench outside the Jacobs School of Music. I chose this photo to represent moment because you can see the student sitting down taking a break between classes. Credit: Samantha Smith
Soggy – Two students are seen sitting behind the Jacobs School of Music fountain. This is a bit of an abstract representation of soggy, but I was having trouble finding something that was actually soggy so I decided to get creative and find something that could be looking through water that could potentially be soggy. Tall – A squirrel is seen standing up looking at some food on Sept. 29, 2022. This was a bit of a last minute photo when someone near by decided to give a squirrel some food. I quickly got out my camera and got this photo, it isn’t the best and the lighting isn’t great but I was pretty happy that it was in focus. Credit: Samantha Smith
Slow – A student is seen walking up the stairs in Franklin Hall on Sept. 29, 2022. I chose walking up stairs to represent slow because I always associate going up stairs with taking a long time. Credit: Samantha Smith
Gritty – Franklin Hall is seen in the background of this photo on Sept. 29, 2022. To me gritty is the same material as sand and gravel so I always associate the sides of the buildings with gritty. Credit: Samantha Smith
Youth – A baby tree is seen growing in Dunn Meadow. I had a lot of trouble coming up with ideas for this picture. Mainly because I felt uncomfortable taking pictures of children or anything like that, so I tried to get a photo that represents the life cycle of another species. Credit: Samantha Smith
Fast – The Kelly School of Business is seen with students walking in front. I chose this photo to represent fast because I wanted to get a photo with a slow shutter speed visually representing people moving. Credit: Samantha Smith
Unusual – A student is seen walking past the Art piece outside the Eskenazi Art Museum. I thought this piece created an interesting frame for this photo. Credit: Samantha Smith
Layer – A student is seen walking to class on Sept. 29, 2022. The light poles here are meant to represent layers but I think they also just convey a lot of depth to the photo. Credit: Samantha Smith
Lonely – Herman B. Wells statue gestures towards the camera on Sept. 29, 2022. This photo is a bit random but I think it is kind of comical to think this statue if lonely in this photo. Credit: Samantha Smith
6:30am – A girl is seen running past Read Hall on the morning of Sept. 29, 2022. This was the best photo I got from my morning shoot.
Tattoo – Katie Rebekka is seen displaying her tattoo in a mirror. I know these photos were not supposed to include people we knew but again I did not feel comfortable asking random people for photos of their tattoos, I will work on getting more comfortable with that in the future.
Red – A stoplight is seen on E 3rd St. A had this idea for this photo when we first got the assignment. Credit: Samantha Smith
Pattern – Four windows are seen at Ballentine Hall on Sept. 28, 2022. This was an unexpected photo as I was walking around and saw this and thought it would work.
Fear – A squirrel is seen on edge on Sept. 28, 2022. This was another unexpected photo but I am glad I was able to capture it. I feel like squirrels in general represent a bit of fear all of the time.
Joy – A group of girls are seen inside of Hartzell’s Ice Cream on Sept. 28, 2022. I was very happy with this photo because I originally went to go get photos of anything happening around Kirkwood but when these girls saw me taking pictures of Hartzell’s they smiled and waved at me. Sunset – The sun sets over Bloomington Indiana on Sept. 28, 2022. I was hoping to get a silhouette of someone walking in front of the sun but could not get the right angle. Credit: Samantha Smith
Love – A woman is seen talking on the phone outside Franklin Hall. This photo is a bit of a stretch but it represents love because this woman was talking on the phone to her mom. Also I really love how the light shines through the windows here behind her. Credit: Samantha Smith
Shadow – A shadow is seen on a tree as a man walks by. This photo was also unintentional at first but I really liked it when I saw it. Credit: Samantha Smith
Bright – The sun shines brightly behind a girl waiting on the bus outside the Geology building. I think the sun might be a little over exposed for this photo but in a way it adds to it. Credit: Samantha Smith
Curve – A student is seen walking up the stairs of the Student Building on Sept. 27, 2022. I really liked the curve of these stairs here. Credit: Samantha Smith
Overall I felt this project really pushed me to get photos of things I wouldn’t usually go for. It also forced me to go out at random times of the day and sort of just wander around and look for interesting things. I went out a few different times for this assignment and my original plan when doing this was to come up with an idea of what I wanted for each photo and then try to create it. But after a few times of that not working I decided to just go out and get any photos and then see how they relate afterwards. A few of my photos I had ideas for multiple different words but ultimately landed on these. I was really proud of how I got better about feeling more confident taking pictures around people. However I think one thing I really need to work on is getting even more comfortable. A few photos do not include people or do not perfectly fit the word because I felt too uncomfortable taking pictures of people with that. I think with a bit more practice I would be fully ready to go out and get photos of whatever is needed though. I did find ways to work around this problem though and since this was such an open assignment I used my creativity to look at the word from a different angle and really highlight another part of it that I had not originally thought of. I think my photo quality was fairly decent but the content displayed here could be something to work on.
