Night Feature

For this assignment I was challenged by the fact that these past two weeks there have really not been any events happening at night that were outdoors. For my night feature I highlight the men’s cycling time trials that took place Tuesday night. Men and women cyclists race around the track four laps for a time that ranks them in their Little Five community. This time is also important later in the season when the Little 500 takes place. Taking photos at this event was a lot of fun. Last year I went to the Little 500 with my friends but I had never really paid attention to any of the details around the racing itself. Watching the racers prepare for their trial and hearing them talk strategy with each other is like stepping into a whole other world for me. The most challenging part of this assignment, photography-wise, was the lighting. The event did not start until 8:30 but the track was lit up with very bright overhead lights which made for a glare in my lenses and sometimes an overexposed photo. I also found it difficult to get different angles of the racers because they were on the track and I was held back behind a chain-link fence. However, I did also use this as an opportunity to experiment with different angles for my photos. In one of them I included in my gallery I started to try different frames with the fence and the racers. I also tried to get up on the bleachers behind the track and shoot down onto the races that were happening, these photos I found, however, to be more blurry because I was not able to hold my camera as stable or get the specific angle I wanted. Overall, I think this project was a lot of fun and I definitely think that I am improving my photography knowledge. When I go out and shoot photos now I caught myself thinking through the different concepts we have learned in class and trying to practice them on my own projects.
