Photo Story- Take 1

This is an interaction image of Officer Katherine and I interacting with a homeless man named Robert to ask him how him and his pets are doing. Credited by: Jamie Conklin

For the first take of my photo story, I had the opportunity to drive around in a cop car around the homeless areas of San Jose, California. My family friend recommended one of his fellow co workers, Officer Katherine Orellana who was kind enough to give me insight on the homelessness in San Jose. We drove around a creek area that the homeless people had basically taken over. This creek has a trail that people used to run, walk, or bike through that has become a place that the homeless have made their home. We were able to drive through the area, and Officer Katherine was able to stop to allow me to take photos, and show me what their interactions and lifestyle is like. The first stop we made was to say hello to a homeless man named Robert. He has multiple dogs and cats, and has been living there for years. He was the only homeless person I was able to interact with, but I learned a lot about how they live and what the government does to try to help them. Officer taught me that they have certain camps for people who are trying to get better, and she also showed me the ares where the government has funded tiny homes for the homeless people. The government also has given them phones and tablets which has been very helpful to them. Regarding interactions with the police, she said they will sometimes get calls that people report regarding danger in the area or people that are fighting, but the police try to leave them be. In this experience I learned so much about the way they live, the creative things they have done to make that place their home, and I was able to see what their homes looked like from a little bit closer of a perspective. The one challenge I had was that I was unable to get out of the car for the most part to shoot closer pictures and interactions, however I was still able to take pictures as close as possible from the window. I would say that this was a very interesting and effective story and I am really happy I was able to get more insight through photos and hearing stories.
