The protagonist of this photo story is going to be Ruth Flegman. She is a person who has different hobbies, but among them, one stands out especially. She loves soccer. She is not a fan of any particular team, she just enjoys watching it. When Qatar was announced as the host country for the 2022 World Cup, she was very disappointed. No one was happy with the decision – least of all those who are taking money for themselves – but there are certain groups that have been more affected. It is known that Qatar is a country with a lack of freedoms and that they do not respect certain groups. First of all, women do not have the same rights as men and are repressed in many aspects. Another group that is discriminated against is the LGTBI. Ruth loves soccer but she is a woman and a lesbian. Since Qatar became the host country, she has been repeating for herself the same question: Do I watch the World Cup or do I go according to my principles? The answer is very difficult if you are a big soccer fan, but she has decided not to watch any match.
This is a difficult decision because the World Cup is the biggest event in soccer and there is only one event that happens every four years. Ruth is English and is studying now in the United States. These two teams are in the same group so she knew that not watching England- USA would be difficult. She needed to think of something to do during those two hours that would keep her mind off her cell phone.
As I said, she has several hobbies, so she turned to her second favourite hobby: pole dancing. This photo was taken during the match. She was pole dancing for the whole match, which helped her not to think about what was going on in Qatar.
I took many photos but decided to use this one because the pose she has with her hands and her hair reminds me of a pose of freedom; which is ultimately why she is not watching the World Cup – because there are no freedoms in Qatar.
