This portrait assignment was very fun overall. I learned how to use the strobe light, which was awesome to say the least. It was cool to get to learn something new that transforms your photos just with the light.

For my first photo, I used window light to capture my friend Jacklyn’s emotion. She had just come home from class and was very excited to be done with classes that day. I think she radiates happiness in this picture, which truly was how she was feeling. I always think it is incredible to capture people’s emotions in photographs. I had her stand in front of the window, facing it, as I sat with my back to the window. This way, the light came pouring in at a direct angle to her.

For my second photo, I had my subject Jacklyn stand in the paint/graffiti room in our house. There is paint all over the walls and I thought that would make for an interesting background. I placed the strobe light directly to the side of her so it only hit the right side of her face. The left side of her face is more concealed, which I think gives this photo a mysterious vibe. I also like the way the background wall kinda makes the composition seem deeper than it actually is. Also, although Jacklyn is a very bubbly person, she also is very serious when she is passionate about something, so she was channeling her passion in this photo and what motivates her.

Lastly, in my third image is the extreme closeup. This photo actually was an accident, but it turned out to be one of my favorites and I am proud of it. I was playing around with the lighting and caught this image. I thought it was cool to catch her off guard in a sense so it was candid. I think in this unit, I learned how to place my subjects in the light to create different types of photos. I never really thought about how important light was before this unit, so now I am a lot more aware of it and how to use it properly. I think one thing I still need to work on is making sure the photos are fully in focus more.
