Reading Reflection: Ch.4

In the poor country of Malawi the children gather for a hot meal of rice. This poverty stricken boy is shown wrapped in the cheerful color of yellow despite his poor life circumstances.

A lot that I took away from this chapter was that color, contrast, and the way an image is composed affects a photo greatly. If you have an image with dramatic colors draped across someone’s face and then you turn it black and white then that level of intensity could fade or the message that you want to convey with the rainbow of color could become redefined. You have to become intentional about where you are placing your subject and how you want your image to be portrayed; what message do you want people to take away?

The photo that I’ve submitted I took when I was on a mission trip in Malawi. I picked this photo because I really liked the contrast of colors against the boy’s skin. Within the textbook they claim that the color purpose of yellow most times is to convey cheerfulness and often has an association with the sun. I love that these colors can convey this concept of happiness when the context of the image is so clearly provincial. This poverty stricken boy, who is clearly hungry and in need of a decent meal, is wrapped in this cheerful fabric.
