While there have been some other of Freeman’s chapters that I found to be. More abstract at first, Chapter 2 resonated with me instantly as I think I have a very design focus brain. The concepts of balance, contrast, patter/repetition, etc. have all been so important in my design career so I was excited to read how they apply to photography. My takeaway was that they function the same, you can just have more control over the elements you include in design since you have to work with what you have while photographing. I think I have paid attention the Gestalt the least in my own photography.
I looked specifically for a photo that I had taken that invoked Gestalt principles and I think this one comes the closest. The tent and the arrangement of people within the frame create this really dominating triangle shape and I think I was aware of that while shooting so I tried to play with the visual weight and directional force of the scene by sticking that triangle at the bottom of my composition and having it point up. This is an old photo so I’m not in love with it today, but I like the way I was thinking when I took it. I will definitely focus in looking for these implied shapes in my photography because I think it is an easy way ti start taking my photos to the next level.
