In Freeman’s sixth chapter of “The Photographer’s Eye,” he discuss the important of a photographer taking initiative when it comes to finding a good composition and subject for our photography. The world is out of our control and as photojournalists we are unable to manipulate it to meet our needs so instead we need to learn how to work with the world around us to get those shots we all want.
I especially enjoyed what Freeman was saying about reaction and anticipation, which I feel go with each other well. We all want to have reactions in our photos in our photos because they are so human and can potentially add conflict to our photos. Similarly, Freeman was saying that as photographers we need to anticipate what may happen and set ourselves up for that. I think anticipating reactions can produce some great images and it’s a skill I definitely want to improve.

This is a photo from last year’s Pridefest. I was struggling to capture the wrestler because of the crowd so I set myself in a place I thought would have a good vantage and waited until he got back up on the ring to take a picture. The actually composition is terrible because I took these on a 5 minute break from work that day but other than that I think this is such a fun photo because of that bit of interesting of having a professional wrestling ring set up at a pride event, which does not always go hand and hand in people’s minds.
