A squirrel is seen on a path un Dunn Woods on Aug. 227, 2022. I chose this picture to represent placement zones. Credit: Samantha Smith

I chose this picture because I wanted to highlight the placement zones portion of the chapter. A lot of this chapter was talking about lines and shapes and how to lay out your photo with these elements. But I was more inspired by the placement zones at the beginning of the chapter. I had never seen it described like that and it made a lot of sense to me. In photography there is obliviously the main types of placement and division of the screen like the rule of thirds. But this chapter used these “placement zones” to really how how you can push the boundaries with these. The examples they had were central, close to the edge and slightly off-center. The photos in the book make a lot more sense than me describing them but I think this photo in particular is a good example of close to the edge placement. It is described in the book as “markedly eccentric, needing some justification. And I think this photo justifies the use of this type of framing. I wanted to fully capture the squirrel so you could see the details, while also including the leading path behind as a way of leading up to the squirrel. Another part of the chapter talked about focus and how to use it to help you when using placement points and shapes as described in this chapter. And I think overall the use of focus in this photo helps to convey the general effect better.
