Workshop 04: Compose & Wait!

For this lab, I chose to set up at the bus stop in front of Bryan Hall and use that as my point to focus on. I knew this would be one of the most consistently busy spots around Franklin Hall during the time period so I wanted to make sure I had enough opportunities to try different compositions out. Because I knew I would not have trouble with people passing through the spot, I focused on trying to convey the way a bus stop feels at 10 in the morning. Personally, bus stops feel like a liminal space so I wanted my photos to match that. My favorite picture is the really wide shot that shows Bryan Hall towering behind the people waiting at the bus stop. The sun made the top left corner fade into light, which makes this shot feel very dreamlike and the students look minuscule in comparison to their surroundings. I framed the horizontal shot with a lot of talking space around the girl to show how lonely it feels to wait at a bus stop. My last shot only shows someone’s back, but I think it works in context of the other photos because it’s easy to tell that she is looking for the bus. Again, I wanted to play up the anonymity of being just another person at the bus stop.

This workshop was really fun as it gave me a lot of room to play around with lighting and compositions. I was using a 50mm prime so I was moving around a lot to get these shots and honestly that’s my favorite way to shoot.
