It was nice that we were able to be inside for this workshop since it was so cold outside. Learning about the different types of focus that comes with layering was helpful. I have been using different layering techniques, but not consciously, so it’s nice to put a name to what I was doing. Using a front focus is nice for separating the subject when there is a very active background that can draw the viewer’s eye. The back focus was also fun to work with since it can block out blank space and force the viewer’s eyes towards the subject, like how I did with the bars of the staircase. Using layers helps me to add components to my photo without having to actually include more subjects to my composition.
Setting up the camera to where the focus button is no longer a half press on the shutter is going to take a lot of getting used to, but I think it will be better for when I am taking photos. Separating the two functions helps to make me more aware of where I am putting my focus point. Doing this will hopefully eliminate, or at least decrease, the amount of times that I focus on the wrong spot for my compositions.
