Workshop 1 – Ambient Portraits

I worked with Sam Smith to take our window light portraits. I think it turned out a little underexposed and didn’t match the tone of the photo or the vibe that Sam gave me, so I went ahead and increased the exposure in Photoshop.

I think that one of the most valuable takeaways I got from the first workshop was actually learning about the exposure triangle. My only photography experience prior to this class was C-226, which I took in the fall of 2019. Since then I had basically forgotten everything we learned and exclusively shot in AV or TV without really knowing the difference.

Taking a step back and having that time to experiment with the ISO, F-Stop and shutter speed allowed me to see how a certain setting would affect the overall picture, and having this time for both of us to experiment both with the external light and the settings on the camera allowed for a basis that ultimately has made me far more comfortable with the camera than I was before.

I learned a lot about light in the workshop, and that has helped with everything we’ve worked on going forward, but having that base knowledge that I was only ever tangentially aware of before has made me a more confident photographer and helps me understand why my photos look the way they do, and most importantly what I can do in future shoots to fix those errors.
