The I-U campus students and staff found a crime notice e-mail in their inbox last week with an alert some found unsettling. A freshman IU student reported a rape that she says took place a week earlier, on Sept. 20 in a dorm room at Wright Quad. She told IU police she met the assailant over a social media app and that the suspect invited her to what he said was his dorm room at Wright Quad where he raped and choked her. The two had not met in person prior to the incident.
The crime notice states that IUPD knows who the suspect is but it’s an on-going investigation and anyone with information on this or any crime should call the IU Police Department.
A reported rape on campus hits close to home for many students. IU senior Isabella Gutierrez says caution important when meeting up with someone you met over an app.
“If you go somewhere, a place you have never been before, or are meeting someone you’ve never met before, just make sure you tell a friend and give as much detail as possible to them,” Gutierrez said. “Keep your friends in the loop.”
The IU senior also told IU NewsNet that she believes communication about the reported crime could have been more efficient.
“I hope IU works on notifying students via text or call, (because) an email isn’t always the first thing people check.”
