Reduce, Reuse, and Waste ? Bloomington’s recycling crisis and the distribution of waste.

A lot of recyclable material in Bloomington does not get recycled.

The recyclable material either gets thrown in waste bins or disregarded altogether by waste plants because they do not belong with the items deemed as trash.

About 10% of Bloomington’s recycling is contaminated by non-recyclables and ends up in landfills. These items also cause issues for workers who sort the waste.

Bloomington’s Local waste management experts recommend citizens pay more attention to what they are recycling to prevent cross contamination at all costs.

Things like cell phones, pizza boxes and even plastic bags. do not belong in the recycle bin.

These items leave stains on the inside of the material that prevent them from being recyclable. If you were to take a greasy pizza box and put it in the recycling bin it cannot and will not be saved.

Item’s that are recyclable and non-recyclable.

There are ways that you can help your community and campus out and that is by watching what you pitch. Look closely at the things you throw away and examine them properly.

If you are second guessing if it can be recycled it more than likely cannot be.

Another effective way to recycle properly is by practicing at home separating your recyclable materials and waste products right where you live. Getting accustomed to how the system of recycling works and how you can improve the environment is a major step.
