At Indiana University, finals week is quickly approaching. While most students are carrying laptops and books to class, senior Christian Oates is carrying something sweeter … cupcakes.
While on campus, Oates hands out free cupcakes to his teachers, classmates, and strangers.
It is a tradition that started for him in high school.
“It was senior year, and I wanted to give back to my teachers and everyone who helped me get that far,” Oates said. “I decided to make cupcakes for them. The custodians and security guards were giving me high fives because they enjoyed the cupcakes, and that really meant a lot to me.”
Four years later, what once was a mere act of kindness has transformed into Oate’s business, Cardinal Cupcakes.
Oates operates the business entirely out of his apartment. The cake, icing, and filling is made from scratch by Oates himself.
“As corny as it sounds, I make them with love,” Oates said. “I’m not making them in bulk or anything. They’re not made with preservatives, so the flavors are a lot more pure.”
The idea for the business began during Oates’ sophomore year. After baking cookies and cream cupcakes for friends, they suggested he start selling them.
“That planted the seed in my mind for the fact that I could actually make a business,” Oates said.
Balancing baking and college life isn’t easy. Oates often finds himself baking late at night after classes and other commitments.
“It’s tough, but it pays off, and I still enjoy it,” Oates said.
Community plays a big role in Oates’ journey. From his church helping him get a food manager’s license to friends supporting his efforts, he credits those around him for his success.
“Community has made me who I am, and this is my way of giving back,” Oates said.
His cupcakes have become a surprise treat at weddings, family events, and even classrooms. “I love the surprise factor of bringing people cupcakes out of nowhere,” Oates said. For him, it’s about making people feel appreciated.
The name Cardinal Cupcakes is deeply personal. Inspired by his favorite bird, the cardinal symbolizes hope, peace, and positivity.
“When I was deciding on the name, I saw more cardinals in one week than I had in my whole life. It felt like confirmation,” Oates said.
Oates dreams of opening a physical store someday, starting in Bloomington.
“Long term, I’d love for Cardinal Cupcakes to be a college campus staple,” Oates said.
For now, he’s content sharing his passion with his community, one cupcake at a time.
