The Coronavirus has impacted millions of lives across the globe, but some, more than others. Millions of people have been personally affected by the virus, and others have lost loved ones or their source of income due to thousands of businesses being shut down. The sports industry has taken a massive hit over the last few months. Since March 12th, all professional sporting events have been suspended including all NBA, NHL, and MLB games, and the NCAA cancelled spring and winter sports. Athletes, teams and sports reporters have been left without jobs and for many, an income.
For many spring sport collegiate athletes, they played in what they thought to be the final games of their careers. Indiana softball player Emily Goodin was in her final season as a Hoosier when the Coronavirus unfortunately stole it from her.
Emily, along with the rest of her teammates, didn’t know what was in store for them over the next few months. They were told different things about what their season might consist of but nothing was set in stone.
On March 30th, the NCAA announced that spring sport athletes would be given an additional season of competition which means they have an extension of their eligibility if they choose to take it.
Emily Goodin discusses her emotions after the short season and more.
Although many collegiate athletes have been able to see some positive aspects of this, there are thousands that aren’t working at the moment. However, athletes across the world are not the only ones that have been affected by the suspension of athletic leagues. Millions of people that work in sports journalism have been affected because there are no sports to cover which means many have been left jobless.
Seniors graduating from college with a degree in sports media and graduating from college this semester have struggled to find job opportunities.
Miya Ingle, a graduating senior from IU, is finishing up her degree but for the moment, doesn’t have a plan for what is next. She covered the baseball team for BTN Student U and IUSTV this season but because it was cancelled, she didn’t get the opportunity to work as much as she would have liked.
Second semester senior year is when many students have the opportunity to create some of the most important content and begin to search for jobs but they have been unable to do this because of so many cancellations.
The sports world being on hold means struggle for some as it has affected millions. While it is at a standstill for the moment, all anyone can do is hope that they can return soon and people can find work again.
Senior Miya Ingle discusses the job search, the sports world, and more.
