Assembly Hall transformed from a basketball arena into a playground of hope as A Kid Again hosted an unforgettable day for families raising children with life-threatening illnesses.
Laughter and excitement echoed through the historic court as children swapped hospital visits for carnival games, face paint, and basketball drills. For many families, it was a rare opportunity to relax and enjoy a day without medical appointments or restrictions.
“This is about creating joy,” said Katie Pappas, executive director for A Kid Again Indiana. “We want families to step away from the stress—even if just for a few hours—and feel part of something fun and supportive.”
More than 40 families attended Saturday’s event, which was organized and staffed by nearly 100 IU student volunteers. The Adventure marked the largest hosted by A Kid Again in Bloomington since the organization expanded to Indiana in 2020.
IU basketball player Anthony Leal made a surprise visit, joining kids on the court for games and photos. Organizers said Leal’s appearance was unannounced, helping keep the focus on the children and their families.
IU junior and volunteer Kuran Patel said working the event changed his perspective.
“You don’t realize how strong these kids are until you see them smiling through everything they’ve faced,” Patel said. “It puts your own problems into perspective.”
