Sometimes things turn out better than you could possibly imagine. That’s what happened for IU senior Mykayla Brown on October 7 when she scored a pair of goals to lead the Hoosiers to a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Senior Day.
“This was an amazing feeling. I can’t even describe it,” Brown said after the match, “I’m glad we got this win, especially for the seniors.”
Brown got off to a hot start. In the fifth minute she gave the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead with her fifth goal of the season. The forward found the ball on a re-service and put it in the back of the net.

After that sweet start, things turned sour for IU. Minnesota first found an equalizing goal in the 31st minute, then took a 2-1 lead on a corner kick. What came next was a truly unbelievable rally.
“We talked about turning our mentality back after something goes wrong and I think we did a really good job,” IU coach Amy Berbary said, “I don’t think we got frantic, we knew we were capable, but it’s gotta go one goal at a time and I think we did a really good job of turning it on.”
The Hoosiers pulled level with the Gophers with just six minutes remaining in the match. Junior Meghan Scott got the ball at the top left side of the box and managed to bend it inside the far post for her first goal of the season to make the score 2-2.
Less than two minutes later, a pair of seniors linked up for the game winner. Maya Piper found Brown with a through ball and she found herself one-on-one with the keeper. From the top of the box she buried the ball in the bottom left corner to give the Hoosiers a 3-2 lead and the win.
“It’s unbelievable,” Berbary said, “I can’t remember the last time we won on Senior Day.”
