IU Student-Athletes Get NIL Assist on Campus

Mark Janis, Maurer School of Law Professor, saw an opportunity for IU and took it. That opportunity is the first of its kind among all schools across the country.

The Center for Intellectual Property Research, in the Maurer School of Law, recently launched a program to assist Hoosier student-athletes in the emerging world of Name, Image and Likeness. This allows them to get legal representation and help right on campus for free. The student-athletes will uniquely be working with law students, who will gain many valuable skills while working with their peers.

The NIL initiative program will be available to more than 700 student-athletes at IU with assistance provided on a first-come, first-served basis. It will also be open to other students on campus who may have NIL opportunities.

Janis is also the Director at the Center for Intellectual Property Research at the Maurer School of Law and is very excited for students to take part in this new program.

The clinic is run like a law firm, with experienced lawyers working alongside high-level law students. Fortunately, they don’t charge their clients lawyer fees. It is a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Anthony Leal, IU men’s basketball player, has recently explored NIL deals and thinks this program can be a game changer for years to come.

Students and student-athletes who are interested in the program should contact the Intellectual Property Clinic at ipc@indiana.edu.
