When the weather is warm, one of the busiest streets across any college town is closed off for students and citizens to walk around freely. This is Kirkwood Avenue, home of Kilroy’s on Kirkwood, Nick’s English Pub and many other well known establishments near Indiana University. But once the bitter cold starts to turn the corner, Kirkwood opens back up for car traffic to drive right through. This usually happens late fall and this year Kirkwood Avenue will open back up November 1st.
This will make business move all of their customers back inside as well as making sure everyone gets used to the new road that will be open for the first time in several months. Kirkwood is one of the busiest streets with a lot of commotion when it is closed off, with everyone enjoying the beautiful weather Bloomington has to offer in the Spring, Summer and Fall. But with Winter right around the corner, it is time to move back inside until the may flowers bloom.
Kirkwood is a staple to Indiana University and Bloomington itself as it has plenty of activities and spots to visit for people who live here and are visiting. From places to eat to trying to find a place to watch the Hoosiers play in whatever sport intrigues the community the most that day, Kirkwood has all the spots to stop at. When the roads are closed off, people are walking through the street and enjoying their food and drink on picnic tables throughout Kirkwood. But with the road opening back up for the winter, it will allow traffic to get to and from campus as well as the establishments a lot easier and quicker.
There will be more parking spots for those who struggle finding one, but there will not be a ton more. Street parking will open up where it was closed off before, allowing just a few more spots for cars to park. Traffic will clear up on other streets like 7th street, 5th street and Dunn street, which will allow traffic to flow for freely throughout campus.
Nick Mathein is a bartender at Kilroy’s on Kirkwood right on Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street. It is one of the most popular bars within the student body as well as alumni that travel back to Bloomington. One thing in which opening up Kirkwood Avenue to car traffic is the new attention it will bring to outside visitors and families coming to visit Indiana University for the first time.
