Magic: The Gathering is a tabletop card game where players battle each other using various spells and creatures. It gives players the opportunity to use different strategies to win, since there is no set in stone way to play.
“You can just do whatever you want. You can make super silly like a deck that’s nothing but frogs,” Smith says. “Or something more serious. There’s a lot of room for personal preference.”

In addition to hosting events like Magic Night and Pokémon Night, Hi5 Cards and Collectibles sells trading cards, sports cards, Funko Pops, and other memorabilia.
“Collecting was like a big thing in the 90s. Even into the early 2000s. So that’s what I was doing when I was a kid,” said Jake Young, manager of the store. “And now people from my generation are adults, and we have money now.”
Card collecting as a hobby has seen a resurgence in recent years, and “breaking” has been a way for everyone to get involved.

Regardless of whether or not you’re revisiting this hobby or getting into it for the first time, there is still a place on the east side of town to escape your everyday life.
“You go to work. You go home. And for some people their third place is their church, or a restaurant, or a bar. This is an alternative to that,” Young said about the store.
