Mistakes cost the Hoosiers against Kent State

Indiana came into Wednesday’s midweek matchup against Kent State riding an eight-game winning streak—that streak didn’t survive the night.

An error-ridden performance sunk Indiana’s streak as overall the Hoosiers failed to perform in the field, on the mound, and at the plate.

“Yeah, we really didn’t do anything well,” IU head coach Jeff Mercer said. “Literally anything. We had terrible approaches offensively and terrible baserunning. Add all that together and it’s even a minor miracle we were in the ballgame into the ninth, 10th and 11th inning.”

What kept the Hoosiers in the ballgame that late were heroic moments from Matt Lloyd and Elijah Dunham. In the bottom of the eighth inning IU trailed by two, but Lloyd stepped to the plate with one out and jacked one over the fence in left field to cut the lead to one.

As the senior stepped on the plate and headed back to the dugout he seemingly tried to hype up his teammates and it worked. The next batter, Dunham, followed Lloyd’s lead. He mashed one all the way out to the Hoosier bullpen to tie up the ballgame 6-6.

Indiana fell behind again in the 11th inning and got bailed out by some huge plays. In the bottom of the inning Scotty Bradley led off with a double to the gap and with one out Wyatt Cross came to the plate. The senior had just three hits in nine games before Wednesday and was 0-4 at the plate on the night, but somehow he managed to groove a pitch over the fence in right centerfield to tie the ballgame 8-8.

The next inning wasn’t as kind to the Hoosiers as a wild pitch allowed Kent State to take the lead once again and Indiana couldn’t mount another comeback. The Hoosiers lost 9-8.

Now the Hoosiers will have to get back on track this weekend when they travel to College Park, Maryland for a three-game series against the Maryland Terrapins.

“We have to,” Mercer said, “we don’t have a choice but to make corrections and to be able to play fundamental baseball.”

The series between the Hoosiers and Terrapins will kick off on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
