Mourning Through Togetherness

Six months ago, the nation of Israel was rocked by a devastating terrorist invasion by Hamas. The attacks were felt across the world and led to a rise in anti-semitism. In the following months, Jewish students on college campuses across the country dealt with anti-semitic and anti-Israel demonstrations.

Despite security concerns, the Indiana University Hillel Center decided to hold their annual Israelpalooza celebration at Dunn Meadow. Unfortunately for the Center, poor conditions forced them to move the festivities to the Hillel Center itself. The decision was made in the hopes of putting the past trauma of October 7th behind them.

At the event, the Hillel Center offered different activities and a variety of Israeli foods to show their support of the country. Although the celebration was upbeat and lively, the effect of anti-Semitism still showed. The names of the hostages still trapped behind enemy lines were listed in the entrance to the Center. On top of that, several police officers were stationed at both entrances.

The organizers of the event said that the event was not just a celebration of Israel. They explained that it was a way to show that the Jewish community on campus was not afraid of the threats that come their way. Although the past was still traumatic, togetherness and faith was how they would get through it.
