This past Friday, Season Magazine held their annual Clothing Swap in order to raise money to aid publishing costs. You know what they say “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
Season Magazine is IU’s one and only fashion magazine, focusing on the fashion and arts surrounding all of us in Bloomington.
The magazine is created and published entirely by IU students. Those who work for the magazine as well as those featured in the pages of the magazine are your peers, friends, and may even be your next-door neighbor.
The Director of Marketing for Season Magazine, Connor Garcia, says the focus of their magazine is “to highlight Bloomington, our community, and the students at IU and really give a voice or a spotlight to people who might be underrepresented on campus.”
Season puts out one edition each semester. In publishing, there are many responsibilities that are asked of staff when creating their final product. Their team consists of students working in photography, editorial, marketing, communications, merch and styling, and creative design.
In order to keep Season Magazine running smoothly at IU, Season has an annual clothing swap that allows these passionate students to raise money to publish editions of their magazine.
IU Sophomore Molly Cai found out about Season’s Clothing event on Instagram, “I saw the event on their Instagram page and thought it would be a fun event.”
Students across Indiana University attended with clothes they no longer liked or wore anymore and donated them to the clothing swap.
This event works as almost a communal thrifting experience. One student begins by collecting clothes and taking them to Season Magazine to donate. With other students doing the same. The event turns into a thrift store, where you can shop for other students’ clothing.
A clothing swap has become a trend across the country because it is a great way to get rid of clothes you no longer wear, like, or fit anymore. Season is now allowing for IU students to participate in the trend and give fellow peers clothing a new home.
Clothing swaps are considered not only a good way to refill one’s wardrobe but also considered an act of environmentalism.
The prices Season Magazine offers at this event are extremely affordable. “Let’s say you find a shirt and pants that may only be 3 bucks so you Venmo us 3 bucks and we use that money to go towards printing editions that go to our members for free,” said Season Magazines Director of Marketing, Connor Garcia.
With an initial goal of 200 dollars, Season’s event was extremely successful as they were able to surpass this amount and raise 354 dollars. With the money they raised, they will now have enough to order print editions free for their members when they launch on December 1st.
Don’t worry, no clothing will be left without a home! All the leftover clothing that was not sold will be donated to Goodwill, Opportunity House, My sister’s Closet, and the LGBTQ+ Culture Center’s Gender Affirming Closet.
