Stark Manor: A Stay You Won’t Forget in Indiana

Tucked away in Indiana’s southern countryside, a nearly 200-year-old farmhouse offers more than just a place to stay. It’s a step back in time, complete with a herd of Scottish Highland cattle.

Stark Manor, a restored 1835 home, has become a peaceful getaway for those looking to experience farm life while enjoying the comforts of a modern Airbnb.

Recognized as one of the most loved homes on Airbnb, according to guests, it stands out for its exceptional ratings, positive reviews, and reliability.

The story of Stark Manor begins with its deep historical roots. Built by Scottish immigrants, the farmhouse once stood on a 2,000-acre plantation. Over time, the land was divided, and the home changed hands before eventually being purchased by Shelly and Randall Blankenship.

Now, nearly two centuries later, the couple has spent two years carefully restoring the home, preserving its original charm while updating it for modern comfort.

“We really tried to make the grounds as peaceful and relaxing as possible,” said Shelly Blankenship, owner of the Airbnb. “If you live nearby and don’t want to go out of state for a vacation, we’re the perfect staycation spot.”

One of the biggest attractions? The Scottish Highland cattle roaming the fields.

These shaggy-haired cows, known for their horns, gentle nature, and striking appearance, have become a beloved part of the farm. Guests can watch them from a distance or feed them carrots from the fence line.

“They’re just lovable,” said Randall Blankenship, owner of the Airbnb. “They know when you’re bringing a treat. The second they see a carrot, that’s all they think about.”

Guests also have the unique opportunity to bottle-feed a 3-month-old calf named Finley, available through March, making for a memorable and hands-on experience.

While Scottish Highland cattle are typically bred for beef due to their lean meat, the Blankenships have taken a different approach.

At Stark Manor, the cattle are raised not for consumption but to maintain the farm’s peaceful atmosphere and provide a unique and rural experience.

Among them is Jackson, an adult male Highland known for his love of chin scratches. His friendly nature has made him a guest favorite, embodying the docile temperament of the breed.

Guests at Stark Manor are treated to more than just the presence of these unique cattle.

The farm-to-table experience extends to their stay, with hosts leaving fresh farm eggs, homemade sourdough bread, seasonal fruit from the property’s apple, peach, and plum trees and other locally sourced treats from nearby farmers.

“We have bees around the property and even an old grapevine that’s been here for who knows how long, but it produces a lot of grapes every year” said Randall Blankenship.

Shelly and Randall Blankenship, owners of Stark Manor, own and operate Levi Farms, a business specializing in excavation and land clearing.

In addition to their work in construction and land management, they run a farm with Scottish Highland cattle that require daily care and maintenance.

Their experience in farming and excavation allows them to manage both their business and the upkeep of their Airbnb.
