Susan Snyder’s Pottery: From Italy to Bloomington

American artist Susan Snyder has captured attention for her unique approach to maiolica pottery while blending traditional Italian techniques with contemporary themes. Trained in both Faenza, Italy, and Bloomington, Indiana, Snyder’s hand-painted pieces feature elaborate floral, fruit, celestial, animal, and geometric designs reminiscent of 13th to 18th-century Italy.

Despite her dedication to tradition, Snyder infuses her work with a modern sensibility, creating lead-free, food-safe, and dishwasher-friendly pieces that are destined to become family heirlooms. Her craftsmanship was among only three international maiolica artists featured in the Russian magazine Home. She has also earned recognition on HGTV’s “That’s Clever”, Bloom magazine, and in other notable publications like 500 Plates and Platters.

Susan Snyder’s busy schedule is filled with workshops and exhibitions that showcase her talent. From her whimsical earthenware pottery display with Joyce Porvaznik at Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center to the Holiday Pottery Show and Sale, Snyder’s work is gaining attention across Indiana.

Not only does she exhibit her artistry, but Snyder also hosts engaging workshops at the Pottery House Studio. She offers Italian-inspired maiolica sessions, pottery parties, and hands-on pottery wheel classes suitable for children and adults of all skill levels. These workshops provide enthusiasts with the opportunity to learn directly from Snyder and explore their own creativity in the world of pottery.

Snyder is interested in providing opportunities for creative expression beyond the studio. She offers Clay Kits so people can enjoy pottery-making at home. With options like the Clay To Go Kit, including clay, lesson plans, and optional tools, or the Clay Tool Kit featuring essential crafting tools.
