A beautiful welcome to France

Our group experienced ideal travel conditions and effortlessly flowed through the itinerary all week. We managed to avoid the spotty rain showers in England and arrived at each of our destinations on time. Our flight into England even landed nearly an hour early. However, our journey to France by way of a ferry across the English Channel was a little different.

As we waited aboard our ferry for departure, we watched the wind and rain increase even more from the conditions we had previously experienced while gathering our luggage outside of the ferry. A few members of our group decided it was worth climbing up onto the ship deck despite the weather to get a better view of the channel.

We returned below deck before starting our journey toward France. The waves grew larger and larger, and eventually some members of our group felt the effect of the turbulent water. The group mostly stayed below deck and waited for the ferry to cross into calmer waters.

After nearly two hours, the weather changed drastically. Our view of the channel turned from dreary and drastic to sunny and calm. The water even appeared to change colors with the weather, from a murky gray to a vibrant blue-green. A rainbow appeared port-side.

Senior lecturer Steve Layton read our group a column from “Ernie Pyle’s War” to mark the end of our journey to France, and we began our adventure to the chateau we were staying at for the night. As soon as our coach drove away from the station, we all gasped in awe of yet another rainbow greeting us into France.

This sight made me even more excited for our time in France, and I’m looking forward to experiencing any additional small miracles like this.
