CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) – CEO Tim Cook announced the groundbreaking release of the Apple Watch Series 1 on Tuesday, September 9th at the Apple “Wish We Could Say More” event in Cupertino, California. The event focused on the release of the Apple Watch Series 1 and the iPhone 7. The Apple Watch comes in 4 different sophisticated colors, three different editions and two different sizes. With the Apple Watch, you are able to reply to texts, call contacts, listen to music, and more. “We set out to make the best watch in the world.” Tim Cook said while introducing the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch is touch screen based and features a digital “crown” on the side to help users navigate the watch, allowing users to go to the home screen and zoom in and out.

Middle-Aged Woman uses the Apple Watch
Amanda Mason (nurse) calls a patient on her apple watch. She was trying to schedule a time for her frequent patient to come into the VA for surgery.

After showing an introductory video, Cook introduced Kevin Lynch, the vice president of Apple, to highlight some of the watch’s impressive features. Lynch showed that when you get a notification on your iPhone, the notification pops up on your Apple Watch.  Your apple watch will notify you through the sensors located on the back of the Apple Watch, and you will feel a tapping sensation. When you get a notification, the watch will give you suggested replies or options for what to do with the notification. You’re able to customize these notifications and the options for what to do with these notifications with the app WatchKit. Third party apps are supported on the Apple Watch, and WatchKit allows you to customize what options you want to use when replying to the notifications. When it comes to receiving a text, you are able to send a text back, an audio recording of your voice, your heart rate or a selection of animated emojis. The audio recording feature shows that there is a microphone inside of the Apple Watch that also allows you to use Siri. You can ask Siri to search for different things like movies nearby or to show you your photo album. Cook then came back on stage to present the incredible health and fitness feature. With the health and fitness feature, you are able to get an idea of what your daily activity has been. You can set different activity goals for the day, called “move” goals, in the workout app and start a workout to track your heart rate and how many calories you’ve burnt while exercising. In the activity app, you are able to see how many hours you’ve stood for the day and how far you’ve come in your move and exercise goal. Apple suggests a specific move and exercise goal for the day, however you can customize these to what you think you can achieve during the day. The move goal tracks how many active calories you’ve burned in the day through the sensors on the back of the watch.

Student uses the Apple Watch
Cooper Haughawout, a student at Indiana University, receives a reminder to start homework before it is due later that night. He set the reminder on his new watch so that he would see the notification right away, as he was away from his phone and wouldn’t see it in a timely manner without the watch.

You are able to personalize your watch’s “face”, also known as the lock screen, with different screensavers by holding down on the screen. The screensavers can include features like how far you’ve gotten in your fitness goals for the day, the weather outside, and upcoming calendar events. Another feature of the watch is the ability to swipe up on the screen to control different customizable features of the Apple Watch. For example, you can swipe up to be able to see and change what music you are playing on your phone, or see exactly where you are on the map. The map feature is another groundbreaking feature of the watch, allowing users to look for places around you and get directions to where you need to go.

Cook noted that the watch comes in a series of four colors including Silver Aluminum, Space Gray Aluminum, Rose Gold Aluminum and Gold Aluminum. Apple created three different editions of the Apple Watch Series 1: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition. The screen’s are laminated and polished from sapphire, making the screen difficult to shatter. The charger for the Apple Watch magnetically attaches to the back of the Apple Watch.  The price of the Apple Watch starts at $349 and will be available in 2015. “The list of features is a mile long.” Cook said during the conclusion of the event. “It empowers people and enriches their lives.”

CEO of Apple unveiled its newest product on Tuesday at their yearly keynote event in Cupertino—an innovative smart watch entitled the Apple Watch.

At the event in Cupertino, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to stage to introduce the cutting-edge watch for the first time.  Near the end of the presentation, Cook quickly surprises Apple fanatics with another extension to the Apple repertoire in addition to Apple Pay and iPhone 6 introduced earlier in the keynote.

“We have one more thing,” Cook said.

A futuristic video played showcasing close details of the innovative interface, clasp, screensavers, and bands that highlight the unique customizability of the Apple Watch. After the video finishes, a bright Apple Watch logo appears on the screen as Cook pumps his fists in the air after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.

Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive narrated a highlight video displaying the user-friendly aspects of the new watch.

“We’re introducing an unparalleled level of technical innovation combined with a design that connects with the wearer at an intimate level to both embrace individuality and inspire desire,” Ive said.

Grandma browsing through her Apple Watch using the Digital Crown. The Apple Watch is user-friendly and anyone at any age can use it

Through the sleek digital crown on the side of the watch, users can fluidly zoom, precisely adjust, and navigate to the home screen all through one button. The watch also features a custom design chip built into the bottom side of the watch that acts as a “miniature computer,” Ive said. To charge the watch, simply place is on the magnetic charger, and it will align itself to charge seamlessly.

This is the most personal and intimate device that Apple has ever created. In the variety of watch faces, straps, and collections, the user can seamlessly find a design that matches their personal needs and values. There are three distinct collections: the watch, sport, and edition that are each made of different metals that users can choose from to optimize their experience.

“We designed Apple Watch as a whole range of products enabling millions of unique designs, unparalleled personalization both in appearance and capability,” the Senior VP said.

The Apple Watch has six different straps that are easily interchangeable: the sport band—a tough, durable, sweat and chemical resistant band used for working out and daily wear, leather—a sleek and clean sports context leather designed for ultimate comfort that closes with a metal clasp, and stainless steel—created using a stainless-steel mesh for security. In addition to these styles, Apple also released a smaller version of the watch with identical bands.

Kevin Lynch, VP of Apple is introduced to demonstrate the cutting-edge customizable qualities of the new watch. Lynch spotlights new features such as glances—allowing the user to see quick views of both built in and third-party apps—and digital touch—the ability to communicate with contacts by drawing certain objects, tapping the screen, or sharing your heartbeat.

“These are subtle ways to communicate that technology often inhibits rather than enables,” Ive said.

Using new systems created by Apple such as Watchkit and Quick Board, users have access to interactive notifications and quick autoreplies created by Apple through words, emojis, or even dictation.

Cook also emphasized the importance of the fitness and health aspects in the Apple Watch. In the new Fitness app, users can monitor their activity every day and receive push notifications based on their personal health goals. In the workout app, users gain access to interactive workouts from running to hiking to strength training and can set goals based on how long they want to work out, how many calories they’ve burned, or distance traveled.

“If you’re just someone who wants to be a bit more active, or maybe you just want to track what you’re doing during the day, or perhaps you exercise regularly, or even if you are a very serious athlete, Apple Watch helps you live a better day,” Cook said.

There are custom sensors embedded into the bottom of the watch to measure standing, moving, and workout goals. Users can see their workout summaries and earn awards for their achievements. This data is shared with the health app to continue personalizing the user experience and set realistic and achievable goals.

“Over time, Apple watch actually gets to know you the way a good personal trainer would,” the CEO said.

Third party developers are going to keep gaining access and finding new ways to use the watch in their own businesses. Companies like American Airlines and Starwood Hotels have already integrated this technology to be able to check into your flight or hotel room and Apple is confident that many more corporations will take advantage of this device.

The Apple Watch is compatible with iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s, 5c, and 5, meaning over 200 million users already can use the new device. It is set to release in early 2015 and prices start at $349.

“We think people are going to love to use Apple Watch. They’re going to love to wear it. It’s something functional yet incredibly beautiful. It empowers people and enriches their lives,” Cook said.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — Apple CEO announced the release of the company’s new product, the Apple Watch, at the Macworld Expo in Cupertino on Tuesday. The watch is the company’s take on standard watches and wrist-technology. With many customizable features, the new product brings the iPhone to your wrist.

With an emphasis on seamless improvements, Tim Cook calls this “The next chapter in Apple’s story.” The watch contains new-age technology that allows it to be a top-of-the-line fitness device, with an ability to track things such as heart rate and distance traveled, among others. This new technology allows a more intimate connection to others as well, with new features such as being able to tap the screen and send a vibration, send quick drawings, and even share your own heartbeat with other Apple Watch users.

On a typical watch you’d find a dial on the side to adjust the time. Apple took it a step further. The digital crown is not only used for adjusting the time, but it is also a multi-use home button and scroll wheel, and also a quick way to talk to Siri, allowing users to navigate their Apple Watch with ease.

Woman uses smart watch applications.
Amber Beech looks through the applications on her Apple Watch using the device’s digital crown. The watch emphasizes fitness apps, and encourages users to stay active.

Apple designed a new way of using force to navigate a touch screen, with sensors able to detect the difference between a light tap and a stronger push, creating many new avenues of navigation throughout the device. A sapphire sealing around the surface creates a shield to protect the device from harm while still being completely transparent and responsive to inputs.

The design of the wrist straps are also very customizable, as you can use a chemical and sweat resistant elastic band, a soft leather magnetic band, and a stainless-steel link or mesh bracelet, all with their own versions of an easy-to-use clasp or magnetic band that allows the user to put on and remove the watch with ease, with emphasis on it being comfortably secured to the users wrist. Each style comes with even more customizability, with a range of colors to choose from for each. Along with these, there is always the option for a slightly smaller version of the watch, with matching smaller straps as Apple understands that this is not a one-size-fits-all piece of technology.

Rhea Patel, an Indiana University student, uses her Apple Watch to make a phone call. The Apple Watch brings some of the capabilities of the iPhone to a wearable technology.

Apple introduced “glances” as an easy way to see the most important information at a “glance.” This feature includes being able to conveniently check a schedule, the time and weather, the user’s location, as well as information from third party applications. Users can quickly respond to texts with suggested responses, take calls, and adjust music all within seconds. The watch can be connected to any Apple product you choose, such as your iPhone, MacBook, and other Bluetooth devices like speakers or headphones.

Vibrations for notifications have been included as well. Users will feel a small vibration when they get push notifications. The vibration is unnoticeable or heard by anyone but the user. The watch can also give directions by simply vibrating on either side of the user’s wrist, indicating where to turn.

Cupertino, California– On Sunday, Tim Cook of Apple unveiled the company’s newest product, the Apple Watch, marking a new era in watch technology with the first ever precise and customizable timepiece. It also works conjointly with the iPhone allowing users to have the most customizable and personalized experience. It has features allowing for new ways to interact such as smart reply, dictation and digital touch.

The apple Watch is available in 3 different collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition. The Apple Watch comes with a polished case made from stainless steel. The Sport comes with an aluminum case that is lighter, more durable, and 60% stronger than the standard. The Edition is made from 18 karate gold that has been developed to be twice as hard as standard gold. There are 6 different bands that can be attached to these watches depending on what you desire. These bands range from leather to linked, clasp to magnet, and a variety of colors. The customization is endless, “embracing individuality and inspiring desire” as Cook put it.

Connect and Communicate

The center piece of the Apple Watch is its digital crown. This crown is located on the side of the watch and is used to control the entire watch. You can use it as a navigation tool when scrolling through your apps or to zoom in on things like photos or maps. And when you’re done with everything or need to go back it serves as a home button as well.

The Apple Watch will alert you when you receive notifications by giving a slight buzz feeling on your wrist that is completely silent to everyone around you. The watch then turns on by censoring your wrist moving upward.

The Apple Watch has never seen features for communicating like Smart reply which analyzes the text you received and gives you possible responses you may want to reply with. And if you don’t like those responses Apple watch has a dictation ability. Allowing you to talk your response into a voice memo or a text. These innovations allow for users to connect and share in seconds.

Kate Peterson, an intern at the Mark Cuban Center, gets a call while photographing a swimmer. Due to the Apple Watch’s touchscreen technology, she doesn’t need to take out her phone to decline the call.

Personalization

Apple Watch allows users to have the most personalized and customizable experience ever. It offers customizable watch faces to not only pick what the background of the screen looks like but also what information shows up on the screen. You can select where apps show up and what the apps look like when you select them, like what music plays and what photos can be seen. The Watchkit app was designed to allow users to customize their notifications. Users can select what apps they do and don’t receive notifications from and what they look like.

One of the Apple Watch’s most personal features is the digital touch feature. This feature puts you in touch with other Apple Watch users in a matter of seconds. You can send them drawings, words or information directly from your watch. By hitting the button just below the digital crown your friends in your contacts will show up. You then can select one and send them whatever it is you would like. This innovation allows for a new kind of human interaction through technology that nothing else can give.

Health and Fitness

The Apple Watch, as described by Cook, “is an elite health and fitness tracker.” It can track your total body movement using an accelerometer, your intensity of a workout by measuring your heart rate, and it uses a GPS to track how far you’ve moved. Apple has developed two new apps that specifically help with health and fitness: the Fitness app and Workout app. These apps were designed for everyone, whether you are a health guru, just trying to get in shape or a superstar athlete.

The fitness app is built to track your daily activity. It uses 3 measurements to help you stay active; stand, move and exercise. The goal of this is to get users to sit less, move more and get exercise. The move ring will measure the calories that you have burned and is customized to you depending on how many calories you want to burn a day. The exercise ring captures all the activity that you have done.

The workout app gives users a detailed measurement of their workouts. It allows users to select specific workouts and customize them to their goals. You can set a time limit, a number of calories, or distance. The app will also give you updates during your workout of how you are doing. And when you finish you can see a summary and earned rewards for your achievements.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — Apple CEO, Tim Cook, announced the unveiling of the first ever Apple Watch at their annual developer’s conference on Tuesday, September 9th, in Cupertino, California.

The new watch, that will feature health and fitness, is expected to receive positive feedback. Cook confidently announced this new product with an innovative and detailed video highlighting its features. He highlighted abilities to track heart rates and activity levels, as well as demonstrating their customizable watch faces you can make uniquely your own. After the video was shown, Cook was beaming with delight while pumping his fist into the air with the new watch on his wrist. He left the audience buzzing with excitement after the announcement of this new product.

Paris Marshall uses the GPS setting on her Apple Watch as she walks to the Sample Gates at Indiana University. Marshall also uses one of the watch’s fitness features to track her steps daily.

After the introduction, Cook showed a video where Jony Ive, Vice President of Design, went further into explanation of the amazing features the Apple Watch offers. Ive goes on to explain the significance of every part of the Apple Watch. He explains the dial on the side of the watch, known as the Digital Crown, which is the main function for scrolling and zooming in and out on the watch. The Digital Crown was created on the watch, so the user does not have to cover up the screen when trying to use the device. Ive also mentions how accurate the watch is and how easy it is to use. Whether it be trying to send a text message or scroll through photos, the Apple Watch is simple to operate. The personalization of this watch is endless, whether it be with a colorful cool background or a sleek, modern watch band. “You can personalize both their appearance and their capabilities,” Ive said. The bands for the watch are easy to slide on and off and there are hundreds of different styles to choose from.

One of the most exciting things about this watch is the different capabilities it has. For example, the application options are endless on this Watch. Users are able to send messages and take calls just as you would on your iPhone. Not only this, but you are able to scroll through photos, look at notifications from third party apps, check the weather, play games, and more. However, one of the apps that is expected to stand out the most is the Fitness and Workout app. The Fitness application monitors your activity and movement throughout the day. The Workout app allows you to set goals with the workouts you do. Finally, this watch will have three different collections to choose from; such as the Watch, Watch Sport, and Watch Edition. “Creating beautiful objects as simple and pure as they are functional, well that’s always been our goal at Apple,” is the statement Ive leaves the audience with before Cook returns to the stage. Once again, after this video was shown, the audience was beaming with excitement and wonder about what all this watch truly has to offer.

Joey Bejin uses his new Apple Watch to track his heart rate during a workout. The watch’s numerous health and fitness features help Joey make workouts safe, effective, and fun.

A demo of this watch was then given by Kevin Lynch, Vice President, where he goes even further into detail about the capabilities and wondrous features the Apple Watch has to offer. Lynch shows users how to answer messages and how to use the digital crown (the dial on the side of the watch). He even shows how with a simple click of the button that is located on the side of the watch, you can send live messages to people in your contacts. Along with this, he mentions how Siri is already built into the watch and how they are also working with third party companies to make apps that will be compatible with the Apple Watch. After Lynch is done with his demonstration, Cook returns back on to the stage.

As in closing, Cook brings up the “important details”. He mentions how this device is only compatible with the Apple iPhone. The Apple Watch will work with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, and the iPhone 5. The watch will not work with other brands of smartphones. The price is also revealed for this product, at a starting price of $349. Cook does not give a definitive date on when the Apple Watch will be released, but he says how it will be available early next year, and it is worth the wait. Cook reveals that much time, and effort was spent on this product and how he and everyone else that worked on it are so excited for the future of it. “It is something functional, yet incredibly beautiful,” Tim Cook said. “It empowers people and enriches their lives.”
