CUPERTINO, California. (Sept. 9, 2014) – CEO Tim Cook announced Apple’s first-ever Apple Watch by surprise at the end of the company’s annual new product keynote in Cupertino, California this past Tuesday, September 9th. It’s official: Apple has now entered the smartwatch industry.

Before revealing the Apple Watch, Tim Cook introduced the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus at the Flint Center at De Anza College. These new iPhones generated excitement from the audience with their innovative technology and memorable features, including the fact that they are the thinnest models yet. If this isn’t exciting enough, Tim Cook surprised the audience by unveiling Apple’s most groundbreaking product yet: the Apple Watch, marking the company’s bold entry into wearable technology.

“We’ve really gone through enough to call it a day,” Tim Cook joked with the audience before adding, “but we’re not quite finished yet. We have one more thing,” which sent the audience into a rupture of applause and standing ovations. “We’ve been working incredibly hard for a long time on an entirely new product, and we believe this product will redfine what people expect from its category. I am so excited and I am so proud to share it with you this morning,” Cook said, revealing the product as “the next chapter in Apple’s story,” followed by a captivating launch video of the first-ever Apple Watch.

Bob Phelps, 52, plays music using the Spotify app on his Apple Watch. The Watch allows you to seamlessly control the apps on your iPhone.

As opposed to the variety of digital watches released before this week, the Apple Watch addresses the limitations that most of these watches face. Gone are the days of buttons so small they require a stylus or the time only appearing when the front button is pressed. Apple has integrated revolutionary technology that has resolved these issues, making the smartwatch more user-friendly than ever.

The brand-new Apple Watch features a sapphire-glass screen for incredible clarity and scratch resistance, with the added benefit of a seamless wraparound look unlike any other smartwatch. In addition to this protective layer of strengthened Ion-X glass, the Watch is stylish, providing users with over 15 different colors of fluoroelastomer bands to choose from. Luckily for those looking to purchase an Apple Watch online, it comes shipped with a Woven Nylon Band in sizes the user can select. No need to worry about making a separate purchase in addition to your new watch.

In addition to the innovation and style of the Apple Watch’s screen and band, the Digital Crown has been introduced as a powerful navigation tool. This revolutionary step allows users to communicate in ways they never could imagine, right from their wrists. It’s now possible to send and receive text messages, answer calls, and send information as personal as your location, sketches, and even your own heartbeat to other Apple Watch users.

Man sits on bleachers at basketball court, looking at his Apple Watch.
Matthew Otee, 20, checks his watch after a hard game of basketball. The Apple Watch is equipped with exercise tracking technology that monitors the user’s heart rate.

Another set of groundbreaking new features are the Health and Fitness components of the new Apple Watch. As Tim Cook explained on stage, the watch comes equipped with powerful fitness-tracking software that pairs with various apps. The built-in Activity app allows users to view their health stats anytime, tracking movement through the ‘move,’ ‘stand,’ and ‘exercise’ categories. A colored ring closes once specific fitness goals are completed, making it easier than ever to keep track of your health.

To take a closer look at the statistics covered by the Activity app, the Apple Watch measures the number of steps taken by the user, as well as their caffeine intake, blood pulse, calories consumed, and heart rate. While all of these metrics are significant, the calorie count stands out as an especially valuable tool for those on a weight-loss journey. By allowing their users to target specific health goals, Apple has not only set a new standard for smartwatches but has also positioned Apple Watch users for success by providing them with motivation right on their wrist.

While Apple has already transformed the smartwatch landscape with these innovations, it’s important that the watch also integrates seamlessly with Apple’s existing technology. With this in mind, Apple unveiled a set of apps from third party developers that carry over from the iPhone to the watch. Highlights include an app by Nike that uses the fitness tracking to let you compete with your friends, and an app that allows you to use your Apple Watch as a room key at select hotels.  With a commitment to continuous improvement and user-centric design, Apple will undoubtedly unveil new advancements that enhance our lives, making technology more integrated than ever.

In the meantime, Tim Cook left us to imagine what’s next regarding the future of the Apple Watch: “The list of features is a mile long. And I’m certain when developers get their hands on the developer kit, that list will get even longer and there will be things that we couldn’t even imagine in it.”

Tim Cook finishes the Apple Watch presentation by explaining their purpose in creating the device. The Watch was a surprise announcement at the end of an already packed keynote.

The Fitness app featured on the Apple Watch monitors user activity and movement throughout the day. The workout app allows users to set specific goals for exercise like running or cycling, while the watch tracks the user’s heart rate and utilizes GPS to measure distance. The Apple Health and Fitness team designed the watch to help encourage users to live a more active lifestyle for athletes or those simply looking to improve their health. Pairing seamlessly with the iPhone the Apple Watch, allows users to access their notifications, calls, and messages. “I can use dictation to reply to send an audio recording of my voice,” Apple Vice President, Kevin Lynch said. The watch also includes a new selection of animated emojis that Apple created specifically for the Apple Watch. These animated emojis are customizable to send lots of emotion to the watch with minimal work. The watch also makes communication more intimate as users can send each other’s heartbeats on messages. The watch vibrates similar to how a person would tap on one’s wrist to alert the watch user without drawing attention from others.

The Apple Watch also includes Siri allowing users to find quick answers to urgent questions. Lynch exemplified how users could project a question to Siri by asking Siri to show them the movies playing in the local area. After just a few seconds of thinking Siri displayed nearby showings with reviews of the films aligned with the cast and director.

The Apple Watch is an innovative and intimate way to communicate directly from the wrist while serving as a comprehensive health and fitness device. Beyond fitness tracking, it seamlessly integrates with other Apple devices. Cook shared how he uses his to control his Apple TV, while some of his coworkers use it as a viewfinder for their iPhone camera. There are three editions: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition. Cook mentioned how this divide is only going to grow more powerful when developers start creating new apps. Starting at $349, the Apple Watch requires an iPhone 5 or newer to unlock its full potential, offering an unprecedented connecting experience unlike ever before. ###

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) –  On Tuesday, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, unveiled the newest addition to the Apple family, the Apple Watch. This smart-watch allows you to use many of the iPhone features from the convenience of your wrist.

Towards the end of the event, just when the unknowing audience thought it was over, Cook surprised his audience when he presented Apple’s new product, the Apple Watch. “But we’re not quite finished yet. We have one more thing,” Cook said. The audience cheered loudly, unaware that there was going to be more. Cook expressed how this new tech watch has been in the works for a very long time and that this product would redefine what people expect from technology. As Cook walked off the stage, the lights went dim, and the big screen revealed the innovative smartwatch.

Student, Jolie Johns, wears her Apple Watch during basketball practice. Johns appreciates the watch’s features as she can track her heart rate and calories burned while working out.

Beaming with pride, Cook came back out on stage and displayed the Apple Watch on his wrist. This high-tech product is incredibly customizable and personal. “You can find one that reflects your personal style and taste. Because you wear it, we invented new, intimate ways to connect and communicate directly from your wrist,” Cook said. Some of its features include a health and fitness companion, being able to receive phone calls, and answer emails.

While the Apple Watch is similar to the iPhone, it is also diverse in that Apple placed extra functionality on the watch, such as the dial on the top right side of the watch, known as the digital crown, and translates motor movement into data. This is used in place of ‘pinching and zooming’ on an iPhone. The digital crown allows users to scroll on text messages and other apps, and return to the home screen by pressing on it. The crowd cheered loudly as they found this feature fascinating. In order to have an Apple Watch, you need to have it connected to an iPhone, and the watch includes a feature where users can see music played on the devices around and the watch can control music on iPhone, Apple computer, and the music stored at the watch.

Jony Ive, Senior Vice President of Design at Apple, went on to thoroughly describe features of the watch in a video. I’ve described how when creating the watch, they wanted to take a powerful piece of technology and make it accessible, relevant, and personable. They designed this product to be so personable that you would not want it to get into the wrong person’s hands, so consumers wear it on their wrists. Apple wanted users to embrace the individuality that came from wearing the watch. The new Apple watch is so personable to the user that when the user raises their wrist, it senses the movement and activates the home screen which consists of a variety of apps that are familiar to iPhone users.

As the video directed by Ive goes on, it displays all the different features the Apple Watch contains. These include making phone calls, creating timers, a library of music, the calendar, weather, and many more. “Apps are designed for lightweight interaction,” Ive said. The watch creates a way for users to have an easily accessible feature you would have on the iPhone, but from right on your person which can be worn everyday, for any occasion. As the video ended, the audience embraced it with applause for so long and loud that Cook could barely get a word out. Cook’s face showed all his emotions, and he waved to the audience as he was elated to see how positively the audience reacted.

Apple’s team had worked on the Apple Watch for a long time. They covered every aspect needed to create this very unique piece of technology. Cook called out one of the key contributors to the device, Kevin Lynch, the Vice President of Apple, to give the first live demo of the watch. Lynch came out wearing the watch on his left wrist, for the audience to see the demo, Lynch had a custom watch connected to the screen. He goes on to explain features such as the face of the watch, which is extremely customizable as you can change the font, color, and functionality. “…We’ve also been working to enable third-party developers to extend their apps to Apple Watch,” Lynch said. Lynch then goes on to explain how users can use social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. “It’s something functional yet incredibly beautiful, it empowers people and enriches their lives,” Cook said. This watch is motivated to help people to be active, and healthy, and have an easily accessible piece of technology. Apple’s newest addition will be available in stores on April 24, 2015. “It will be available early next year and it is worth the wait,” Cook said.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the first ever Apple Watch on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the annual Apple Event in Cupertino, California.

Tim Cook took the stage of the Apple Event in a navy button up and black pants, addressing the audience and describing updates to current Apple products. When he finished, he clicked a new slide on the presentation that read, ‘One more thing.’ “But we’re not quite finished yet,” Tim Cook said. “We have one more thing.” The audience burst into applause and excitement, as suspense built about was going to be revealed. Once the cheers and whistles died down, Cook revealed the new, exciting, never-done-before Apple smart watch by playing a video on the presentation screen.

The video consisted of smooth music over videos of a sleek, glossy, smartwatch. The clips showed the features of the watch such as browsing apps, telling time, working as a stopwatch, and more. The video ended, followed by loud clapping and cheering from the audience as Tim Cook raised his fist in triumph and excitement. Cook proceeded to tell the audience about some of the incredible features of the watch. Cook noted that all Apple products have been created out of innovation, mentioning the original Mac, iPod, and iPhone. He then commented that the Apple Watch was also created thanks of innovation and that it is an incredibly exciting product.

After a brief vocal description of the Apple Watch, Cook played another video on the presentation screen. This video, narrated by Jony Ive, delved deeper into the features of the watch.

Apple Watch on the arm of a man.
A person’s arm sports an Apple Watch as the watch shows the time and the temperature. The Apple Watch is a smartwatch that is capable of showing precise information about the user’s current surroundings.

At the beginning of the video, Jony Ive set up the basis of the invention of the Apple watch. “We’ve designed a range of products so personal that you don’t put them on your desk or in your pocket,” Ive said. “You wear them on your wrist.”

The Apple Watch is a precise timepiece, synced with the universal time standard. It can be customized completely by the user through its many features and its synchronization with the user’s iPhone. A dial on the side of the watch acts as a tool to zoom in and scroll through apps, lists, or messages, deleting the pinch and scroll aspect of using a typical touchscreen device. This dial also works as the home button when pressed down. The watch can be worn at all times, is created to be pleasing to the eye, and can complement one’s personal style. Monitoring your movement, the watch’s display turns on when you raise your arm, showing the home display of apps. The sapphire display is manufactured with touch and force monitoring. The inside of the watch includes the technology that a computer includes but in a package small enough to discreetly fit on your wrist.

An Apple Watch with a blue band is on a person’s wrist, showing the workout tracking options that the watch offers. The Apple Watch can be used to track the health and fitness activities of the user.

Personalization of the watch extends beyond the screen. Apple has designed six different straps to be easily interchanged per personal preference. The magnetic latching system of the straps is strong and gentle, keeping your watch safe on your wrist. There are two sizes of straps and watches to make sure people with all sizes of wrists can enjoy this product.

Kevin Lynch, Vice President of Apple, came onto the stage after Tim Cook to give a demo for the Apple Watch. Lynch was wearing a light blue button up with black pants and an Apple Watch on his wrist. Lynch proceeded to screenplay the display of his watch to the presentation screen on the stage and then showed the audience how to change the colors and settings of the interface. When swiping on the watch, one can access music, time, maps, calendars, and more from just the home screen. Siri is built into the watch and can be used just as it can be on an iPhone. The photos app can sync with your iPhone so that you can look at your photos from your iPhone on your wrist. Additionally, a user of an Apple Watch can send a drawing from the face of their watch to the face of another Apple Watch user’s watch.

Finally, Tim Cook took the stage once more to discuss the health and fitness aspects of the Apple Watch. The fitness app on the watch monitors all health information received from the user’s body throughout the day, while the workout app tracks workouts and allows the user to set goals. A video explaining these features then played, leading to the conclusion of the revolutionary event.

The features of the Apple Watch have never before been programmed onto such a small and mobile device, able to be carried on a person’s wrist. Apple changed the world of technology and the lives of Apple users with this development and will undoubtedly continue to do so.

Cupertino, California– On Sunday, Tim Cook of Apple unveiled the company’s newest product, the Apple Watch, marking a new era in watch technology with the first ever precise and customizable timepiece. The Apple Watch is synched with the world clock to within plus or minus 50 milliseconds, making it the most precise watch in the world. It also works conjointly with the iPhone allowing users to have the most customizable and personalized experience. It has features allowing for new ways to interact such as smart reply, dictation and digital touch.

The apple Watch is available in 3 different collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition. The Apple Watch comes with a polished case made from stainless steel. The Sport comes with an aluminum case that is lighter, more durable, and 60% stronger than the standard. The Edition is made from 18 karate gold that has been developed to be twice as hard as standard gold. There are 6 different bands that can be attached to these watches depending on what you desire. These bands range from leather to linked, clasp to magnet, and a variety of colors. The customization is endless, “embracing individuality and inspiring desire” as Cook put it.

Connect and Communicate

The center piece of the Apple Watch is its digital crown. This crown is located on the side of the watch and is used to control the entire watch. You can use it as a navigation tool when scrolling through your apps or to zoom in on things like photos or maps. And when you’re done with everything or need to go back it serves as a home button as well.

The Apple Watch will alert you when you receive notifications by giving a slight buzz feeling on your wrist that is completely silent to everyone around you. The watch then turns on by censoring your wrist moving upward.

The Apple Watch has never seen features for communicating like Smart reply which analyzes the text you received and gives you possible responses you may want to reply with. And if you don’t like those responses Apple watch has a dictation ability. Allowing you to talk your response into a voice memo or a text. These innovations allow for users to connect and share in seconds.

Kate Peterson, an intern at the Mark Cuban Center, gets a call while photographing a swimmer. Due to the Apple Watch’s touchscreen technology, she doesn’t need to take out her phone to decline the call.

Personalization

Apple Watch allows users to have the most personalized and customizable experience ever. It offers customizable watch faces to not only pick what the background of the screen looks like but also what information shows up on the screen. You can select where apps show up and what the apps look like when you select them, like what music plays and what photos can be seen. The Watchkit app was designed to allow users to customize their notifications. Users can select what apps they do and don’t receive notifications from and what they look like.

One of the Apple Watch’s most personal features is the digital touch feature. This feature puts you in touch with other Apple Watch users in a matter of seconds. You can send them drawings, words or information directly from your watch. By hitting the button just below the digital crown your friends in your contacts will show up. You then can select one and send them whatever it is you would like. This innovation allows for a new kind of human interaction through technology that nothing else can give.

Health and Fitness

The Apple Watch, as described by Cook, “is an elite health and fitness tracker.” It can track your total body movement using an accelerometer, your intensity of a workout by measuring your heart rate, and it uses a GPS to track how far you’ve moved. Apple has developed two new apps that specifically help with health and fitness: the Fitness app and Workout app. These apps were designed for everyone, whether you are a health guru, just trying to get in shape or a superstar athlete.

The fitness app is built to track your daily activity. It uses 3 measurements to help you stay active; stand, move and exercise. The goal of this is to get users to sit less, move more and get exercise. The move ring will measure the calories that you have burned and is customized to you depending on how many calories you want to burn a day. The exercise ring captures all the activity that you have done.

The workout app gives users a detailed measurement of their workouts. It allows users to select specific workouts and customize them to their goals. You can set a time limit, a number of calories, or distance. The app will also give you updates during your workout of how you are doing. And when you finish you can see a summary and earned rewards for your achievements.

The new watch, that will feature health and fitness, is expected to receive positive feedback. Cook confidently announced this new product with an innovative and detailed video highlighting its features. He highlighted abilities to track heart rates and activity levels, as well as demonstrating their customizable watch faces you can make uniquely your own. After the video was shown, Cook was beaming with delight while pumping his fist into the air with the new watch on his wrist. He left the audience buzzing with excitement after the announcement of this new product.

After the introduction, Cook showed a video where Jony Ive, Vice President of Design, went further into explanation of the amazing features the Apple Watch offers. Ive goes on to explain the significance of every part of the Apple Watch. He explains the dial on the side of the watch, known as the Digital Crown, which is the main function for scrolling and zooming in and out on the watch. The Digital Crown was created on the watch, so the user does not have to cover up the screen when trying to use the device. Ive also mentions how accurate the watch is and how easy it is to use. Whether it be trying to send a text message or scroll through photos, the Apple Watch is simple to operate. The personalization of this watch is endless, whether it be with a colorful cool background or a sleek, modern watch band. “You can personalize both their appearance and their capabilities,” Ive said. The bands for the watch are easy to slide on and off and there are hundreds of different styles to choose from.

Users are able to send messages and take calls just as you would on your iPhone. Not only this, but you are able to scroll through photos, look at notifications from third party apps, check the weather, play games, and more. The Workout app allows you to set goals with the workouts you do. Finally, this watch will have three different collections to choose from; such as the Watch, Watch Sport, and Watch Edition. “Creating beautiful objects as simple and pure as they are functional, well that’s always been our goal at Apple,” is the statement Ive leaves the audience with before Cook returns to the stage. Once again, after this video was shown, the audience was beaming with excitement and wonder about what all this watch truly has to offer.

A demo of this watch was then given by Kevin Lynch, Vice President, where he goes even further into detail about the capabilities and wondrous features the Apple Watch has to offer. Lynch shows users how to answer messages and how to use the digital crown (the dial on the side of the watch). He even shows how with a simple click of the button that is located on the side of the watch, you can send live messages to people in your contacts. Along with this, he mentions how Siri is already built into the watch and how they are also working with third party companies to make apps that will be compatible with the Apple Watch. After Lynch is done with his demonstration, Cook returns back on to the stage.

As in closing, Cook brings up the “important details”. He mentions how this device is only compatible with the Apple iPhone. The Apple Watch will work with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, and the iPhone 5. The watch will not work with other brands of smartphones. The price is also revealed for this product, at a starting price of $349. Cook does not give a definitive date on when the Apple Watch will be released, but he says how it will be available early next year, and it is worth the wait. Cook reveals that much time, and effort was spent on this product and how he and everyone else that worked on it are so excited for the future of it. “It is something functional, yet incredibly beautiful,” Tim Cook said. “It empowers people and enriches their lives.”

CUPERTINO, California (September 9, 2014) –

The Apple Watch was unveiled Tuesday by Apple CEO, Tim Cook, in Cupertino, CA. With this new watch, Apple users have the ability to use their phones from the comfort of their own wrists. Tim Cook appears very modestly, allowing him to easily blend in with the audience. His down-to-earth demeanor is received well throughout the audience. He portrays the new device in a positive light, and innovative future. Cook built up the suspense and got his viewers to be just as excited as he was about this launch. When he began the display video, the watch spoke for itself.

Pictured here is Nick Johnson, an IU student. He is shown walking a dog. Wearing the Apple Watch while walking helps him keep track of his steps.

“Apple Watch of course is made to be worn and it can be worn all day for any occasion, it’s much about personal technology as it is style and taste,” said Cook. The Apple Watch pairs via bluetooth to your iPhone, and allows users to do many of the day-to-day tasks one would do on their cell phone including but not limited to: messages through voice or drawing, phone calls, music, health checks, workout features, etc. From watch faces you can personalize to your liking, to a variety of differing colors and types of watch bands, everyone can make their Apple Watch to fulfill their own wants and needs.

Pictured here is Malory Owen, a stained-glass artist. Wearing the Apple Watch allows her to keep track of the time it takes for her to do this task without picking up her phone.

The Apple Watch contains some new and exciting features as well, that are catered to a watch screen rather than a phone screen. An example of this being the glances feature. “… so we’ve created something called glances and the way you get to glances is you just swipe up from the bottom of the watch face and you’ll see information that you choose to have here,” said Cook, “it can be from our built-in apps it can be from third-party apps.” This factor lets each user decide what is important enough to have in this part of their watch, based on their own personal needs and lives, giving users a ton of flexibility. An additional feature that is watch specific, is the ability to track your heart rate paired with other fitness-related components. “Apple Watch is designed to help anyone who wears it lead a healthier life by being more active from people who just want to be more active throughout their day to those who work out a few times a week to athletes committed to improving their performance,” said Cook.

Although there is no “home button”, which Apple users are used to having, the Apple Watch offers a digital crown, which operates similarly to the home button, requiring users to simply turn the crown forward and backward to go in and out of applications. Similar to your iPhone, your Apple Watch home screen can be customized in a way that makes your most used or important apps easily accessible. Additionally, the “lock screen” can display a variety of different widgets such as time, weather, reminders, health features, notes, etc. As you can see, the Apple Watch is made for you, containing a wide range of features making that possible.

Everyone loves listening to music during a workout, but sometimes pressing skip or adjusting the volume can be tedious when on the treadmill. With the Apple Watch, you can do all these tasks from your wrist, without the necessity of picking up your phone mid-workout.

This Watch is going to be a staple for Apple users both now and in the future. In the words of Cook himself, “Apple Watch is the most personal device we’ve ever created, it will redefine what people expect from a watch.” Users both are and should be stoked about this unveiling, and excited about what Apple does next with this watch.
