Apple CEO, Tim Cook, unveiled a new product on Tuesday, the Apple Watch, with new features such as, fitness tracking and easy access to texting and calling. The Apple Watch was released as, “one more thing” alongside a new iphone at a convention center located in Cupertino California. The center erupted into an uproar of applause at Cook’s statement revealing the product.

Nobody expected anything more to be released after the unveiling of the iPhone 6, but Apple fans everywhere received a pleasant surprise. Software developer, Kevin Lynch, made an appearance to showcase the watch’s features and highlight the new technology. One of the many highlighted features that Lynch covered was the messaging system and how user-friendly it is. “It lets you send a lot of emotion without interacting very much at all on your watch.” Lynch said. Another functionality Lynch covered was the map functionality, which can zoom in and out by simply using the watch’s crown. Additionally, based on what direction you need to turn after choosing a route, a different vibration will be sent through the system’s haptic feedback that is different for right and left.

Priced at $349, this revolutionary device can read your heart rate, answer phone calls and texts, and has Bluetooth connection. The watch has a battery life of up to 18 hours and is charged on magnetic diodes which can also read your heartbeat.  It comes in sizes of either 38mm or 42mm with a stainless steel finish. With this piece of technology, you can answer phone calls or texts with a device on your wrist.

Apple realized that the typical touch screen on their products wouldn’t work since the screen would be obstructed by the wearer’s hand trying to zoom in and out; they decided to put a spin on a regular watch’s crown and make it into a digital navigation mechanism. If the crown is pressed, the watch will return to its screen. By simply raising or lowering the wearer’s wrist, the device will sense the movement and turn itself on or off. Responding to texts has never been easier; by simply choosing a pre-generated response or speaking into the watch’s microphone, text messages can be responded to by just raising a wrist. The watch band can be easily swapped out for a different one, and the box with the watch contains two watch bands that can fit any size.

Cook truly believed that the Apple Watch was the next major step in Apple’s evolution. The Apple Watch is compatible with iPhones back to the iPhone 5. This device will be available April 24th, 2015, and available for preorder April 10th. They can come in colors such as gray, gold, rose gold, and silver. This watch is also splash resistant, which means minor contact with water will not damage the device.

Additionally, the Apple Watch has a slew of personalization features built into it, like “faces”. Kevin Lynch showcased a space setting, or the “Astronomy Face” for the watch which not only told the time, but gave the current cycle of the moon, and the current position and names for each planet in our solar system. It can also be set to either an analog or digital clock.

The apps on the Apple Watch can be arranged in any way that fit the user’s liking and when rotating the watch’s crown, the screen can zoom in and out, showing more or less apps. The Apple Watch also comes with voice activated commands; for example, Lynch asked the watch what movies were playing in Cupertino. The watch answered with a schedule of movies playing that day.

CUPERTINO, California. [Sep. 9, 2014] – Apple® introduced the newest advancement in technology, the Apple Watch™, during a press conference on Tuesday at Flint Center in Cupertino, California.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, developed a new form of technology that will help advance the industry for the future. He wants his users to not only have access to the Apple Watch, but to let them personalize their own with their unique customizations. “We love to make great products and really enrich people’s lives,” Cook said, “We love to integrate hardware, software, and services seamlessly. We love to make technology more personal and allow our users to do things that they could never have imagined.”

One of the greatest advantages to using the Apple Watch is all of the applications that users will have access to. Applications that users can find on the Apple Watch include Maps, iMessage, Weather, Photos, and many more. Kevin Lynch, Vice President of Apple, talked about how users are able to find all of these applications by viewing the home screen that shows a collection of different types of apps connected with one another. “We thought a lot when we were designing the Apple Watch,” Lynch said, “about how to really reveal all of the great ecosystem of applications on this device and we wanted to build it in a way that was really easy to find and use.”

Another advantage is an accessory that was made for the Apple Watch called the loop. This is an arm band that is connected to the watch to help bring more resistance. The loop comes in many different color options and different sizes for your wrist. It helps embrace the flashy style of the Apple Watch and makes it seem more modern while you wear it.

The Apple Watch is also beneficial to people that are active as it is designed to help users track their data while moving around. “Because you wear it,” Cook said, “we invented new intimate ways to communicate directly from your wrist. And it works seamlessly with iPhone and it’s also a comprehensive Health and Fitness device.” This leads into the new iPhone and its perfect compatibility with the Apple Watch.

Apple released two new iPhones during the release of the Apple Watch that included the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus. Phil Schiller, executive at Apple, spoke to the audience about the two new iPhones and how different they are compared to the other versions. “Their design is like nothing ever before,” Schiller said, “Incredibly unique from the glass front that curves around the side to meet seamlessly with the anodized aluminum back complete with stainless steel Apple.” Cook describes the iPhones as the best they’ve ever developed because they are compatible with the Apple Watch and their new  features help make the iPhone more reliable to the public.

Like the home button on the iPhone 6, there’s also a home button on the Apple Watch called the Digital Crown. Jony Ive, Senior VP of Design, explains how the button makes it easier to exit out of apps and zoom in on features while using the Apple Watch. “The Digital Crown is a remarkable input device,” Ive said, “It fluidly zooms into apps, it enables nimble, precise adjustments, and critically you can use it without obstructing the display.”

The company also developed a new feature of the iPhone called Apple Pay, a quick and easy way to pay without the struggle of card delay at the register. Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Services, explained to the audience how fast the new payment option is for users and how it is protected for those who use the new feature. “Apply Pay is built into every iPhone 6 and 6 plus and we’ve got a groundbreaking NFC radio antenna built across the top,” Cue said, “Now NFC is the standard for all contactless payments. Now you also have the convenience and security of Touch ID and we’ve got a new chip called the secure element and it’s built into every iPhone 6 and it stores all your payment information encrypted and securely.”

Cupertino, California – Apple has once again redefined the future of personal technology with the introduction of its first-ever wearable device, the Apple Watch. Unveiled by CEO Tim Cook at a special event, this highly anticipated product marks a major milestone in the wearable tech market. It promises to bring convenience, personalization, and seamless integration into everyday life.

“The Apple Watch is the most personal device we’ve ever created,” Cook said at the event, emphasizing that the device is more than a simple smartwatch. It’s a deeply integrated part of the Apple ecosystem, connecting with the iPhone to deliver notifications, fitness tracking, and seamless access to apps – all from their wrist.

Student checking how much time he has left until his next class. The Apple Watch does much more than tell time, being described as a wearable iPhone.

An Unprecedented Design with Personalization at Its Core

Apple has been known for merging form and function, and the Apple Watch is no exception. With a choice of three distinction collections – Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition – users can customize their devices to suit their style and needs. The watch itself is offered in two sizes and is made with premium materials like stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and for the high-end Apple Watch Edition, 18-karat gold.

Jony Ive, Apple’s Chief Design Officer, highlighted how personalization is a key aspect: “We wanted to create a product that not only looks beautiful but feels deeply personal to the wearer. With its interchangeable bands and customizable watch faces, no two Apple Watches need to look the same.”

The emphasis on style extends beyond appearance. Users can personalize their watch face with digital designs, ranging from traditional chronographs to animated displays, ensuring that the Apple Watch is not just a functional device but a stylish accessory for any occasion.

Health and Fitness, Redefined

A standout feature of the Apple Watch is its focus on health and fitness. With sensors built into the watch’s back, it measures the wearer’s heart rate, activity levels, and exercise habits. Whether walking, running, or simply standing out throughout the day, the watch tracks progress via Activity Rings

The Activity app simplifies goal setting into three categories: Move, Exercise, and Stand. These rings motivate users to stay active by “closing” them through daily movement and exercise. The Workout app on the Apple Watch is tailored for athletes, tracking specific activities like running, cycling, and swimming, providing real-time data such as distance, pace, calories burned. Cook emphasized that the Apple Watch fosters personal health improvement, enabling users to actively monitor and manage fitness goals. Paired with the Health app on the iPhone, users can access detailed activity data and share it with healthcare providers for easier fitness management.

Digital Crown: A New Interface for Wearables

To solve the challenge of navigating on a small screen, Apple introduces the Digital Crown, a unique mechanism located on the side of the Apple Watch. Users can rotate the crown to scroll, zoom, and interact with the watch without blocking the display.

Ive described the Digital Crown as a breakthrough in user interface design: “it’s a completely new way to interact with a wearable device – offering precision and control in a familiar, tactile form.” This innovation ensures that users can easily access apps, notifications, and other features with just a twist or press.

Taptic Engine and Notifications: Keeping You Connected

The Apple Watch provides seamless connectivity to your iPhone, enabling notifications directly on your wrist. The Taptic Engine gently taps users for alerts, messages, and calls, allowing for discreet awareness without constantly checking a phone.

Users can even respond to messages on the go using Siri or present replies, answer calls, or access apps like Maps for turn-by-turn directions. Cook described the connectivity as “personal yet unobtrusive,” blending technology with everyday life.

Seamless Integration with Apple’s Ecosystem

The Apple Watch extends Apple’s ecosystem, working in harmony with the other Apple devices. Features like Handoff allow users to start a task on their watch and continue it on their iPhone or Mac, making the Apple Watch a central hub for managing connected life.

This seamless integration ensures that the watch is more than just a standalone device – it’s an extension of Apple’s powerful ecosystem, bringing familiar apps and services to a new, wearable platform.

Pricing and Availability

The Apple Watch will be available in early 2015, starting at $349. IT comes in three distinct collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition, each offering a range of materials and customization options. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a fashion-forward user, or someone simply looking for cutting-edge technology, the Apple Watch has a model to fit your needs.

CUPERTINO, California (September 9, 2014) – Tim Cook, Apple CEO, unveiled the Apple Watch on Tuesday, introducing a newly developed way to communicate and track productivity, while also providing customizable features for its users. Dressed in a navy blue collared shirt, Cook rolled up his sleeve to flash the extraordinary device on his wrist. The crowd erupted into applause, followed by a standing ovation.

Apple Watch offers a cutting-edge user interface, the Digital Crown, which allows for enhanced efficiency in controls. The Apple Watch operates jointly with the iPhone, enabling effortless communication located right on your wrist. Apple Watch allows users to receive calls, texts, and provides advanced health tracking. Additionally, the powerful new feature, Digital Touch, enables the ability for users to interact on a more personal and intimate level. With various watch styles available, Apple Watch empowers individuals to express themselves through unique personalization.

Kristin Craig trims green foxtail while wearing her Apple Watch on Sunday evening. Even when the watch face is off, it still tracks her movements.

“This product will redefine what people expect from its category,” said Cook. “Apple Watch is the most personal device we’ve ever created.”

Apple Watch’s innovation and design of the Digital Crown grants enhanced scrolling and navigation on the watchface. Spinning the dial up and down adjusts the screen to the desired position without interfering with the view. The high-tech user interface also allows its users the ability to return to the home screen by simply pressing the Digital Crown. Likewise, holding it down activates the use of Siri.

The impressive software of the Apple Watch senses the movement in your wrist, displaying the screen when you raise your arm. A sophisticated, organized home screen portrays apps easily accessible by the Digital Crown, and pressing the button just below this activates your contact list for efficient communication. The groundbreaking new feature, Digital Touch, enforces a much deeper connection within messaging. With taps, sketches, and even your heartbeat, communication reaches a new level.

A woman with an Apple Watch works on a puzzle.
Cheri Jostes monitors her heart rate while working on a puzzle Friday evening. This is one of the many healthcare innovations the Apple Watch provides.

Due to the importance of practicality and efficiency, Apple Watch implemented Glances for users to tailor significant reminders and specific information on the watchface. For example, work meetings, major dates, music, and stocks can be accessed by swiping up on the screen.

The display, constructed of sapphire crystal, implements advanced technology which recognizes not only touch, but the dimension of force as well, differentiating between a tap and a press from your finger. Additionally, Apple Watch’s crystal back operates with a transformative charging system, utilizing magsafe technology.

Another highly innovative feature, the linear actuator, referred to as the Taptic Engine, positions itself with haptic feedback during daily interactions and movement. The Taptic Engine notifies users of information, such as text messages, through a discreet tap on your wrist. The Maps Application combines many features of the watch to produce optimal resourcefulness, but it also operates with haptic feedback to guide the users when following directions.

The workout app and fitness app integrate to create a transformative way to track activity and set goals to stay fit. The accelerometer uses highly advanced technology to record specific movements, sensors to track heart rate, and employs the iPhone’s GPS and Wi-Fi to log distances traveled. Specifically, the fitness app concentrates on setting goals for stand hours, calories burned, and exercise minutes completed throughout the day. As a result, motivation is increased and users maintain their health.

Apple Watch’s notable performance pairs with its exceptional opportunity for personalized taste. A wide range of watch faces supplies a multitude of selections including a classic analog timepiece and a model of planets within the solar system. Other functionality resources can be implemented on the watchface such as weather, workout rings, and calendar events.

“It’s driven Apple from the beginning–this compulsion to take incredibly powerful technology and make it accessible, relevant, and ultimately personal,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of Design. “We’re introducing an unparalleled level of technical innovation, combined with a design that connects with the wearer at an intimate level to both embrace individuality and inspire design.”

Apple Watch presents three selections–Apple Watch, crafted of stainless steel; Apple Watch Sport, utilizing an aluminum case; and Apple Watch Edition, constructed of 18-karat gold. For even more customization, six alternative straps can be interchanged, consisting of the Sport Band for durability, Leather Loop for easy adjustment, Modern Buckle for a sophisticated look, Milanese Loop for flexibility, Classic Buckle for traditional taste, and the Link Bracelet for a stainless steel appearance.

The iPhone 6, 6 plus, 5s, 5c, and 5 are required for compatibility with the Apple Watch. Pricing starts at $349.00, and this product will be available for purchase early 2015.

“It’s so simple and elegant–something only Apple could do,” said Cook

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) – Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced a shocking new product, the Apple Watch, to an enthusiastic crowd in Cupertino, California, on Tuesday, September 9, 2024. The groundbreaking new device received rave reactions from excited fans and industry insiders alike.

At this past week’s Apple event, CEO Tim Cook, along with the company’s vice president Kevin Lynch, introduced new technology that the audience was not expecting; the Apple Watch. This groundbreaking product had been specifically designed to redefine how Apple users interact with the company’s technology on a day-to-day basis. “Apple Watch is the most personal device we’ve ever created,” stated Cook, as he stood upon the stage with a proud look while wearing the newly unveiled watch. The Apple Watch not only combines a beautiful design encapsulated with advanced technology, but also has the skill set to integrate health and fitness into commodities for everyday use by the user.

College Student uses Apple Watch
Ashley Waller uses her Apple Watch to track her workout with the IU Nursing run club. Ashley tracked her workout with the watch and was able to track how many miles she ran and her pace.

The new watch has the capabilities of ensuring precise timekeeping, activity tracking for people on the fitness side, and support for third-party apps for the smaller screen; but that’s not even the best part because just like the iPhone the Apple Watch is customizable. Cook emphasized, “Because you wear it, we invented new intimate ways to connect and communicate directly from your wrist.” Users can show off their personality with their new watches by either changing the face of the watch itself or changing the wristbands to match their own personal style.

Some may think that Apple has simply just shrunk down the iPhone interface to fit the watch, but that is not the case. Apple’s team developed the Digital Crown, a unique part of the device that changes the way you can use the watch. By rotating the crown, Apple consumers can use it to zoom in on maps, scroll through lists, or scroll through various apps without having to use their fingers and make an error. The Apple Watch was also designed to work hand-in-hand with the iPhone, making it either a duo or standalone product. The watch will present notifications, allow users to read and respond to messages, answer calls, and even use Siri, all without having to pull out their iPhone once. As Lynch demonstrated these features, he highlighted how users could quickly access apps and important information with just a glance at their wrist.

Employee uses Apple Watch for help
IU Athletic Department employee, Jason Ghandi, uses his Apple Watch to check his notifications during the day. Jason uses it as a subtle way to check his notification without seeming disengaged.

One of the watch’s most impressive features has to be the health and fitness of it all. Both Cook and Lynch discussed how the device is able to track a user’s physical activity and exercise in a positive way, in turn the user feels more encouraged to lead on a healthier lifestyle. The watch has multiple apps related to fitness on it, such as a heart rate monitor, a workout app, fitness goals, and an activity tracker. The key difference between the fitness goals and the workout tracker lies in the details: the fitness goals monitor your overall daily activity, while the workout app targets specific exercises like running, offering detailed data such as distance, calories burned, and more. It doesn’t matter if the user is an everyday mom trying to get her steps in or an Olympic athlete; the Apple Watch is designed to mesh to their own fitness goals and provide them with feedback that way it is more likely for a user to achieve them.

The starting price for this newly developed watch will be $349 and availability can start as early as the next year. Cook wrapped up the event by focusing attention to how the Apple Watch will have an impact on the day-to-day lives of the people. “We think people are going to love to use Apple Watch,” Cook said. “It’s something functional yet incredibly beautiful.” The combination of advanced technology, customization, and health-oriented features, the Apple Watch will become an indispensable tool needed for millions and millions of users worldwide; the company has done it once again by changing the way users interact with their technology. Apple continues to push the boundaries of wearable technology as they just enhanced the connection between users and their devices.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) – An excited Tim Cook speaks on behalf of the unveiling of Apple’s new product, the Apple Watch. With a hopeful audience, Cook confidently and thoroughly shares details about the watch. He professionally explains how customizable this new invention is and allows for such an intimate and personalized experience.

Apple has released many products over the years yet Cook specifically says, “The Apple Watch is the most personal device we’ve ever created.” Cook shares information about how they set out to make sure this product was the best of the best. The Apple Watch has been made to be a precise, customizable timepiece to make sure that it can reflect your very own personal style. The product was invented with new ways to connect and communicate with others right from your wrist. Within the many other features of this new invention, Cook explains the Apple Watch perfectly works along with another one of their products, the iPhone.

Calmly, Cook described that the Apple Watch led Apple to some extraordinary innovations. One of those innovations just so happened to be the user interface. Cook shared how through every product they created there was a needed change in the user interface. The dial that has been on the watch for decades is more profoundly known as a crown or digital crown on the Apple Watch. Cook untangled behind the digital crown are infrared LEDs and photodiodes that transfer rotary movement into digital data. Specifically, Cook shared the concept behind this digital crown, “ When you turn the digital crown it zooms in and out. When you have a list you can scroll through the list, and you can do all of this without blocking the screen. And if you’re in an app like the clock app for example, if you press the digital crown, it returns to the home screen just as you would expect it to.” With so many details behind the whole process of creating the Apple Watch, Cook further explained how they created a video for it, but switched it over to Johnny Ive, the senior VP of design, who narrates it.

As he browses the Ami menu, Jay engages in the use of Safari on his Apple Watch. The Apple Watch acts just like his phone, keeping him actively engaged.

Kevin Lynch Vince, Apple’s Vice President takes over the presentation from Cook and goes further into detail about the watch. Well wearing his very own Apple Watch he wants to give the audience a better understanding and view of it so he displays a bigger version of this product on the screen. Vince dives directly into the layout of the Apple Watch and shows that the first thing you see is the clock. The clock is your main watch face which is basically what you are going to see right when the device is turned on, the watch faces are customizable like everything else through this amazing device and you can easily pick and choose which watch face appearance you want. Going back to the digital crown Vince demonstrates that with a click on the digital crown, it takes you right to all the apps on your device, which are customizable and you can arrange the apps any way you desire. With a swipe of his finger, Lynch shows how easily accessible it is to tap and enter any app on this new product. Another unique feature of the watch that Lynch explained is something called Glances. You get glances by simply swiping up at the bottom of your watch face with the tip of your finger and it takes you to any upcoming events you may have, the weather, music that is currently playing, and the list goes on. Taking in all the notifications that these creators are sharing.

ng Lynch gives feedback to the audience about you getting information to you by saying, “When you’re notified of things on Apple Watch, we’re using the taptic engine to give you feedback on your wrist. It’s just like somebody tapping you on the wrist very gently.” Lynch even goes further into detail in showing how when you feel the notifications on your wrist someone near you won’t even tell since it is very subtle. Specifically when you get a notification from iMessage, when you click reply the system analyzes the text that was given and gives you options of how you may choose to respond.

The Apple Watch has so many more features that Lynch further talks about which just proves how great this product is. This customizable new product has convinced the audience to purchase one and it is greatly shown throughout these creators’ speech how impressed everyone is with it. The Apple Watch offers an immense amount of benefits to your daily life as it has become the most advanced product in tech.

CUPERTINO California (Spet. 9,2014) – CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, took to the stage to announce the release of the new apple watch Tuesday night in Cupertino California, where Apple’s headquarters are located.

Cook excitedly introduced the new smart watch to an eager audience, telling them that they have one more thing. He finally unveiled the watch by showing a video that highlighted its elegant appearance and just some of its many innovative features.

“We love to make technology more personal and allow our users to do things that they could have never imagined,” Cook said. “We believe this product will redefine what people expect from its category.”

Jayden, a freshman at IU is pictured running up the stairs. He is using the Apple Watch’s fitness feature to track his steps throughout the day.

The first feature of the new Apple Watch that Cook described is what is called the digital crown. This feature helps you zoom and scroll on the tiny screen of the watch. The apple team incorporated as much functionality and style into this product as they could.

“The Apple Watch is made to be worn, and it can be worn all day for any occasion,” Cook said.  “It’s as much about personal technology as it is style and taste.”

The Apple Watch is made for everyone and is customizable to anyone’s taste. Senior vice president of design, Jony Ive, demonstrated the watches’ customizability in a video. You can choose from a wide range of watch faces, even personalizing what they look like and what they can do. In addition to this you can switch out the strap choosing from six different types of straps and sizes. They even created three different collections of watches to choose from; the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport, and the Apple Watch Edition.

“We designed Apple Watch as a whole range of products enabling millions of unique designs, and unparalleled personalization both in appearance and capability,” Ive said.

Marelna, a mom of an IU student is seen communicating through her new Apple Watch. The Apple Watch helps her stay in contact with her busy college students.

After Ive explained the personalization of the watch, Cook invited Vice President of technology at Apple, Kevin Lynch,  to do the very first live demonstration of the watch.

Apple Watch pairs with your iPhone and by pressing the digital crown it can take you to an array of apps of your choosing on the home screen. Lynch first showed how to change your watch face to your liking. There are many options including the astronomy face, with this face it shows you where you are on the Earth, then you can fly to the moon and it will show you what phase the moon is in. They even scheduled the event on the full moon to show how great the astronomy watch face can look.

Another very customizable part of the Apple Watch that Lynch demonstrated is glances. Glances is a way to look at other information of your choosing by swiping up from the bottom of your watch face. Glances can be anything you choose like calendar or reminders or even from third party apps.

Lynch then showed the notification and replying process of the Apple Watch. The watch has a very convenient way of receiving notifications and replying to them called Quick Word. Quick Word takes messages, then forms responses you can choose from and easily respond with one click.

Communication is a huge part of the Apple Watch, and now you can use more than words to communicate with your friends. By just a simple tap of the screen you can reach your friends, you can even send something as unique as your heartbeat, which is read from your wrist.

Smart watches have been integrating fitness into their watch design, so Apple did the same thing plus more. They added two new apps to the watch to help users with their health and fitness. One of these apps being the fitness app, which monitors all of your movement throughout the day. The other one being the workout app, which helps you set specific workout goals.

“Apple builds great products that enrich people’s lives, and arguably we can take that to a whole new level with the Apple Watch,” Cook said.

Kevin Lynch, Apple’s senior vice president of design, demonstrates the new Apple Watches customizable features. Apple offers a wide variety of clock faces suitable for all users.

Tim Cook, surprisingly announces the new Apple product creating a positive response from the audience. The “one more thing” was later to be announced as the Apple Watch.
