Apple’s press conference on Tuesday unveils their newest product, the Apple Watch, announced by CEO Tim Cook in Cupertino, California, highlighting the innovative future of the device. Cook, proud of the launch and optimistic about the future of the product and brand, sports the new watch while wearing a casual outfit.

The announcement made at the Flint Center located at De Anza College is explained by Cook as a pivotal moment in influencing customers’ lives and changing their views on such a product. After playing the intro video, Cook steps back onto the stage, arm held high, showing the new, innovative product on his wrist.

The Apple Watch is as precise as can be, matching and being synced to the universal time standard, as well as being customizable, giving users the ability to make the product their own and tailored to their needs and preferences. Along with its precision, it allows users to connect to their devices seamlessly while also doubling as a health and fitness device.

The functionality tools and methods for the device show and express the thoughtfulness behind the product. The digital crown, located on the side of the device, serves as a navigation device for the watch, offering zoom features on applications such as Maps, scrolling on a list, and helping you return to the home screen when exiting out of apps.

The flexible retina display alongside this dial allows the device to have a sleek, sophisticated look, further proving how the Apple Watch combines style and functionality. The variety and range of watch faces, colored bands, textured straps, and types of buckles continues giving users the ability to customize their experience. In addition, there are 3 collections. The traditional Apple Watch is in a polished case, the Apple Watch Sport has an aluminum shell that is stronger while still being light, and finally, the Apple Watch Edition which is made of hard, 18-karat gold.  Touch and force differentiators make the device context-sensitive, and allow for a more positive user experience and increased functionality. All of this is made possible by the new S1 chip and taptic engine that allow for a device this small to have so much use.

The back crystal, responsible for tracking heart rate and fitness-related activities, also connects to the inductive charging powered by MagSafe, which doesn’t require alignment and makes the process easy for users.

Kevin Lynch, Vice President of Apple, made an appearance, giving a live demonstration of the device and its features. This aspect of the presentation presented the various tasks and customizable features the watch has, showing how easy it would be for any user to make this device truly their own. Connection to other devices such as the iPhone and MacBook are also pointed out by Lynch, highlighting how the watch can control certain functions such as playing music from these other products. Quick reply is also an integral feature relating to the ease of use of the watch, giving users a list of potential replies when receiving messages, and the ability to use animated emojis or audio text.

“We’ve also been working to enable third-party developers to extend their apps to Apple Watch,” Lynch points out, expressing this potential due to applications on the iPhone. The partnerships with other businesses, such as Starwood Hotels, giving watch wearers the ability to unlock their hotel door with a tap of their watch, shows their confidence in the watch and the potential it has to better the lives of customers. Other notable connections include Pinterest, American Airlines, and BMW.

Cook dives into what he considers to be one of the most important features of the watch: fitness. “We have two new applications in Apple Watch. First is the fitness app. The fitness app monitors all of your activity and movement throughout the day. And the second is the workout app. The workout app allows you to set specific goals for specific types of workouts like cycling or running,” notes Cook. A comprehensive, in-depth video shows the health impacts and ways the product will allow users to meet their fitness goals. “Apple Watch is designed to help anyone who wears it to lead a healthier life by being more active,” says Jay Blahnik, Director of Fitness, Health Technologies. He points out how this watch and its features are for everyone, from high-level athletes to those just starting their fitness journey.

“Apple Watch required some deep innovation. It’s a precise timepiece with incredible ability to customize. It’s a new, intimate way to communicate directly from your wrist, and it’s a comprehensive health and fitness device. And it is so much more.”

Apple Watch pairs with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5, starting at a cost of $349 in early 2025.

CEO Tim Cook talks about how to charge the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch will lose a lot of battery throughout the day so it’s important to charge it every night.

Vice President Kevin Lynch describes how to access different apps on the Apple Watch. Like the iPhone, the Apple Watch has all of the same apps plus other health tracking apps including heart rate and daily steps.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — On Tuesday, September 9th, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the release of the brand new Apple Watch. The product is the first of its kind and will be available to users later this year. Tim Cook’s introduction of the new product left the audience speechless as they gave him a standing ovation.

Cook was thrilled to share the innovative watch in front of hundreds of Apple users- he could barely hold in his enthusiasm considering his proud laugh and fist pumps. Apple’s new development is very customizable to the user, allowing them to track workouts, quickly communicate from the device, and use third-party apps with their innovative features. The three versions of the watch will allow the customer to choose the perfect fit for them.

A pedestrian uses the Apple Watch to track their workouts. The activity tracker is one of the most notable functions of the new watch and will allow people to record their physical progress.

One of the most prominent facets of the new product is the fitness and workout component. These two features help watch wearers track their workouts in addition to customizing specific personalized goals.  The watch contains sensors that are activated with the movement of the user’s wrist.

During the Apple Watch introduction, a video was shown featuring Jay Blahnik in which he said, “It can track a wider variety of activities because it’s able to collect more types of data. It uses an accelerometer to measure your total body movement. It has a custom sensor that can measure intensity by tracking your heart rate, and it uses the GPS and WiFi in your iPhone to track how far you’ve moved.”  In addition, the watch can measure total burned calories, how long users have stood up, and all physical activity users have completed.  Blahnik then said, “Over time, Apple Watch actually gets to know you the way a good personal trainer would. It’s designed to deliver intelligent reminders to keep you motivated and on track. And it can suggest goals that are personal, realistic, and most importantly, achievable, which gives you a far better chance of succeeding.”  The Apple Watch is both intimate and unique allowing users to use new, innovative software that promotes fitness and a healthy lifestyle like never before.  The watch has several unprecedented features that can benefit watch users day to day life as well as having impressive accuracy and efficient communication.

A student wears her Apple Watch while studying to keep track of time and communicate with peers. Apple Watch users are able to receive and respond to text messages from their watch, allowing them to communicate with people from anywhere at any time.

The watch has multiple attributes that give users the ability to contact others in countless ways in a matter of seconds.  “You can get someone’s attention with a gentle tap.” Tim Cook said, “You can send a quick sketch, or you can even share something as personal as your own heartbeat.”  The Apple Watch is helpful for fast and efficient communication as well as quick interactions on apps.

The watch also notifies users when they receive a notification by making a small vibration that they can feel on their wrist.   The watch contains extra functions that make the device easy to use and navigate considering its small size.  With a multi-purpose crown for zooming and scrolling, a taptic engine with audio and speakers, and infrared LEDs that work alongside the digital crown and engine, the watch can be reactive and responsive for direct and precise transmission.  With these features, watch wearers can call contacts from their watch, send messages, and share emojis and expressions with friends right from their wrist.  The product is unique with ingenious capabilities. “It is so simple and elegant. It’s something only Apple could do.” said Cook.  Users are able to improve their lifestyle and benefit from the watch using methods never seen before.

Lastly, the watch can directly work with third-party apps to enhance the product’s features for users.  With the invention of Watchkit, third-party developers can create additional ways in which users can profit from the product.  During the demonstration of the Apple Watch, examples of third parties that have already worked to develop new features for the watch were shared.  Throughout the demonstration, Kevin Lynch previewed an instance with the GPS app and said “Now, while you’re walking, Apple Watch will give you taptic feedback on each turn. So you’ll know whether it’s time to turn left or to turn right. And those feelings are different for each direction. So you can actually know without even looking at your watch, which way to go. It’s like having this invisible guide with you.”  Lynch further discussed additional apps that were in the process of formatting watch-specific components which include American Airlines, Starwood Hotels, City Mapper, Pinterest, BMW, MLB, Honeywell, Lutron, Nike, and more.  These current brands along with the potential, other developers have to create features using Watchkit, will change the way consumers live.

The customizable and intimate watch is offered in three different styles including the traditional Apple Watch made from stainless steel, the Apple Watch Sport with an aluminum case, and lastly, the Apple Watch Edition made from 18-carat gold.  The three watch designs all can be personalized to best fit the user and their preferences.  The watch is offered with various watch bands that can each be used for different activities, purposes, and styles.  The watch can be purchased starting at only $349 and will be on the market within a year.

Fitness Tracking

The Apple Watch Sport features advanced fitness tracking functionality, enabling the user to record vital health metrics during the day. Furthermore, the Apple Watch Sport continues to monitor the user’s heart rate – all combined provide users with a thorough view of their fitness sometimes. Therefore, the Apple Watch Sport becomes a great resource for those individuals who are health-conscious and want to track the level of activity that is suitable for their health.

Communication Features
In addition to serving as a fitness tracker, the Apple Watch Sport has excellent communication features. Users can send and receive messages, make phone calls, and use Siri, Apple’s voice-activated assistant. This makes it easy to stay connected without constantly reaching for your phone, helping you to make your everyday tasks more convenient and efficient. Digital Crown Navigation
Another innovative addition to the Apple Watch Sport is the digital crown – a uniquely fashioned dial on the watch’s side, made specially for navigation. According to Tim Cook, Apple Watch is the most personal device ever offered by Apple. He stated the watch is not merely a piece of technology, but is part of a very personal, intimate, and shared experience.  The Apple Watch expands upon traditional watches and fitness devices, as a device that will help you communicate, be productive, manage your health, and more from a device worn on your wrist. Cook is also understood to view the Apple Watch not as simply the initiation of a new product, but as a transformational product platform that Apple will develop over time, similar to the iPhone. Apple will continue to introduce software updates and better hardware based upon what they learn from customer experiences. Apple Watch is an example of that innovation, in terms of collecting relevant information, improving customer experience, communication, personal convenience and health. CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, released Apple’s newest product, the Apple Watch. The release of the Apple Watch will include features for all users such as designable interfaces, intimate ways to connect and communicate, and a health and fitness companion to wear on your wrist.

Apple will release three different models of the watch including the Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition. The three designs include features for all users. The Apple Watch is the most simplistic of all models, made for people who want to use the watch for everyday activities. The Apple Watch Sport targets customers who use their watches for athletic and fitness purposes. The Apple Watch Edition is for customers who want a watch case that is crafted from 18-karat gold, developed to be twice as hard as standard gold.

Indiana University Faculty member enjoys a meal at Yogis Sports Bar and Grill using his apple watch. “My wife gave me my first apple watch on fathers day and it hasn’t left my sight since”, he said.

“It’s as much about personal technology as it is style and taste,” Cook said.

The Apple Watch development team wanted to design an interface never seen before. In order to create the best user experience they played around with different sizes and models that customers would benefit most from. Certain features on the iPhone would never work on a smaller interface such as a feature like inch to zoom.

“The Apple Watch required the same kind of careful, deliberate consideration. What we didn’t do, was take the iPhone and shrink the user interface, and strap it on your wrist. The display is too small and it would be a terrible customer experience.” Cook said.

Apple revealing the new Apple Watch’s user friendly digital crown for all watch needs.

The Apple Watch team put a great amount of effort into personalizing their watches. Apple Watch is as much about personal style as it is about functionality and Apple knows that. Apple thought of more than just function, but the way that the watch looked on its customers and how it would be worn. Apple has thought of challenges that will arise due to a smaller interface. However, with challenges that occur, they have thought of all solutions to make their product as easy to use as possible.

“We’ve designed a range of products so personal, you don’t put them on your desk or in your pocket. You wear them on your wrist.” Jony Ive, Senior Vice President of Design said. “We have developed a whole new interface, specific to the challenges associated with a product this small.”

Digital Touch is a feature that Apple has included in their Apple Watches. The feature allows for two people in different places to send pulses to each other whether that be shapes and words or their heartbeat in real time.

“With digital touch, we’ve developed an entire new way to connect intimately with others. You can get someone’s attention, with a gentle tap. You can send a quick sketch. Or you can even share something as personal as your own heartbeat.” Cook said.

The Apple Watch uses magsafe technology and infrared technology to charge. Unlike the iPhone, the Apple Watch charger is magnetic and will automatically attach to the watch when in proximity. The Apple Watch uses magsafe technology in order to prevent misalignment making it the most effective way to charge the watch.

“The back crystal also houses a unique charging solution, that combines our magsafe technology with inductive charging, completely sealed, it requires no alignment or exposed contact.”

Indiana University student uses her Apple Watch to study at the Starbucks on Kirkwood Avenue.

Apple spent a great amount of time creating watch faces that all customers could enjoy. After wearing something all day everyday, Apple knew that users would want something they liked all aspects of, especially design wise. Users are able to customize both appearance and capabilities. They are able to decide which features they want on their watch face such as time of day, weather, activities, or notifications. Apple Watch with six different straps, has a mechanism that makes the straps easily removable and replaceable. Apple has made multiple bands in order to appeal to all customers’ wants and needs based on their daily activity.

“The sport band, in a range of bold colors, is made from a tough, durable, sweat and chemical resistant high performance elastomer. The leather loop comes in a soft quilted leather that conceals magnets for fastening and adjustment.” Cook said.

Apple has always been a company that has appealed to its customers exact wants and needs in the technological world. Apple is a company that allows users to customize their products down to their uses and intentions for the product.

“Creating beautiful objects that are as simple and pure as they are functional, well that’s always been our goal at Apple.” Cook said.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — At today’s launch event, Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the Apple Watch, the newest smartwatch on the market with a sleek design and endless personalization opportunities.

Apple introduced its new smartwatch at the annual launch event in Cupertino, California. Leading up to the reveal of the Apple Watch, Tim Cook built anticipation by first introducing new features like Apple Pay and the iPhone 6, showcasing their innovative ideas to enhance user experience. After highlighting these significant products, Cook stated Apple’s launch phrase, “…we have one more thing…” This moment signaled Apple revealing their most recent development and created anticipation in the crowd. “We love to make great products that enrich people’s lives, and we love to integrate hardware, software and surfaces seamlessly,” the CEO said connecting with Apple consumers. After the Apple Watch’s slow introduction video, the audience gave nothing but love to Cook and a standing ovation.

Many consumers were visibly impressed by the innovative features highlighted and seamless integration with the iPhone. The anticipation built by Cook’s statement, “We have one more thing,” increased the excitement, marking the Apple Watch as a significant development in wearable technology. The positive reaction emphasized the product’s potential to reshape consumer expectations. “We believe this product will redefine what people expect from its category… It is the next chapter in Apple’s story,” Cook said.  His marketing for the Apple Watch holds a exciting entry into the smartwatch market for Apple, seeing it as a efficient innovation that combined technology, health, and fashion.

Indiana University student Gabby Rogers stretching before her workout class at Club Pilates in Bloomington, Indiana. The freshman used her Apple Watch health and activity features to track her heart rate, calories burned, and duration of the workout class.

One of Apple’s most unique innovations was the User Interface; a new version of the user interface was required when developing the new product. Cook states the importance of incorporating functionality in a mechanism on the Apple Watch called the Digital Crown. This function provides a way to scroll, zoom, and navigate without touching the screen. It also serves as the Home button and a way to access Siri. A new form of communication with Digital Touch has been released. This feature allows users to communicate with each other through taps, drawings, and more—something that has never been done before!

Apple developed an original size and a smaller version with different bands or cases options adjusting to their consumer’s needs. They created distinct collections of Apple Watch: The first Apple Watch polished stainless steel | Apple Watch Sport: The sports collection has an iron exchange coverglass and an anodized aluminum case 60% stronger than the standard (first edition) | Apple Watch Edition: Made from 18-karat gold made up to be twice as hard as standard gold. The Retina Display function features force touch, distinguishing between a tap and a press. The IOS-based interface user interface was explicitly created for the smaller smartwatch. The smartwatch offers customizable watch faces from classic designs to user photos, ensuring the watch is set to change how we stay connected and express our style.

“The Apple watch is made to be worn, and it can be worn all day for any occasion. It’s much more about personal technology than style and taste. It seamlessly combines materials, software, and technology.” Cook stated, emphasizing the personalization of a smartwatch. The watch offers a fitness app that monitors all your activity, heart rate, and movement throughout the day and a workout app that allows you to set specific goals for the type of exercise. The smartwatch empowers users to take control of their health and stay in touch without using their phones. Apple also worked hands-on with developers to access third-party notifications. “We love to make technology more personal and allow our users to do things they could never imagine,” Cook said.

Russian instructor Natasha Rubanova teaches her Russian class at Indiana University about spelling. Natasha used her personalized Apple Watch to check notifications from other devices, and proceeded to teach.

The 2014 release of the Apple Watch increased consumer awareness of wearable technologies and features within smartwatches, revolutionizing the smartwatch market. Apple turned its attention away from the watch’s design appeal and toward its fitness and health capabilities. The workout and fitness functions of the Apple Watch drew in new customers. Two hundred million consumers could utilize the Apple Watch since Apple made it compatible with the iPhone 5 through 6 during the development process. It is designed to be simple to charge at night. It includes an inductive charging magnet connecting seamlessly to the watch’s back.

The Apple Watch took years to develop and has continued to improve. “Creating beautiful objects that are simple and pure as functional has always been our goal at Apple. We designed the Apple Watch as a whole range of products… I think we’re now at a compelling beginning designing technology to be worn and truly personal,” Apple stated. Apple is known for producing innovative products, and the Apple Watch is yet another successful example of that.

Apple Announces Release of The Future of Wearable Technology

CUPERTINO, California. (September 9, 2014)-Cook announced the release of a new Apple Product, the Apple Watch.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, announced the release of a groundbreaking, wearable smart watch device called the “Apple Watch’ this Tuesday in Cupertino, California at the annual September Apple release event.

The audience gives Cook a standing ovation as he announces the new Apple Watch. Cook celebrates with the audience during the release of the next great Apple product.

“It is the next chapter in Apple’s story, and here it is…” Cook said as he unveiled the release video of the brand new smart watch. The “Apple Watch” is a touch-screen smart watch, personalized to each individual user. This watch has the ability to track physical activity, make phone calls, send texts, listen to music, and many more functions found on your iPhone. Apple has developed a brand new type of chip, the S1, that essentially compacts the entirety of a computer right on to your wrist. Three different collections of the Apple watch are being released: Apple Watch, Apple Sport, and Apple Edition, so there is a product best fit for each individual user.

Scott Doyne pairs his Apple Watch with his iPhone. Doyne conveniently calls his wife right from his wrist.

Cook demonstrated to attendees, along with the rest of the world, the impressive features of this new product with a physical prototype onstage, as well as informational videos that gave more background on the groundbreaking technology. He emphasized how Apple, yet again, has revolutionized user interface input systems for easy and practical use. While the watch is still a touch screen, a dial, called the crown, is placed on the side of the watch for scroll and zoom functions. This adaptation to the touch screen makes use more practical due to the smaller surface area of the screen.

The Apple Watch is designed for convenience and ease of use. Many features such as quick responses, voice recognition technology, and “glances,” to see notifications, reflect the effectiveness of this design. When receiving a text message on your watch, it analyzes the text you are receiving and gives suggestions on responses you can select and send with a touch on your wrist. You can also reply by speaking and it will be transformed into text, or you can opt to reply with emojis. When receiving notifications, simply raising your wrist shows you options that are customized to each type of notification, so you can see the most important information, as well as the most relevant actions. For example, Kevin Lynch (Apple VP), received a Facebook “Friend Request” notification on his watch, and had the option to accept, decline, or dismiss the notification without even opening the app.

Marley Joseph uses the fitness features of her Apple Watch. Joseph checks to see if she has closed her Move ring at the end of the day.

The watch has many impressive features that create an overall great experience for users. However, Cook went into great detail regarding the health and fitness features of the new product. “The Apple Watch gives us the ability to motivate people to be more active and more healthy,” Cook said. Whether a user is a serious athlete, trying to be more active, or just curious about how much activity they complete each day, the Apple Watch will help them reach their goals and accurately track activity. The Fitness App on the watch tracks all movement throughout the day, and gives users a comprehensive report of their activity.  The Workout App allows users to set specific fitness goals for each type of activity. These apps track heart rate, calories burned, steps taken, time stood throughout the day, and other helpful measurements.

The Apple Watch is compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. The watch must be paired to an iPhone in order for seamless user experience. Potential buyers will be able to experience all of the impressive features of the watch,  starting at a price of $349. It is not yet available for consumer purchase, but will be on shelves early next year. This innovative device will be well worth the wait. “We think people are going to love using the Apple Watch, they’re going to love to wear it. It’s something functional, yet incredibly beautiful. It empowers people, and enriches their lives,” Cook says.

Up until now, Apple has been heavily known for its production of phones and computers, where they have been at the forefront of innovation and at the top of the industry. The Apple Watch provides a new and outstanding leap for the company as this continues its growth in the personal device industry.

One of the physical elements of the watch is what Cook calls the “digital crown.” “If you have a list you can scroll through it, and all this without blocking the screen,” Cook said, “and if you press it, it returns to the home screen just as expected.” The Apple team has put immense thought into the design of the watch. Every aspect is designed to enhance the experience for the user.

Even the watch bands themselves are fully customizable. “They are meant to be worn every day,” said Cook. They have many options for these from more traditional metal, link bands to athletic-style bands that use magnets to fit to the wrist.

The watch has many digital features as well, but the ones that sit at the forefront of the device are the ability to track health, make calls, and search the internet. Starting with the ability to track health, the watch will be able to track everything from steps to heart rate, to how sedentary you are throughout the day. “It is a comprehensive health and fitness device,” said Cook. This feature can sync to the health app on your phone and provide the user with dynamic reports about their day-to-day lifestyle.

The ability to make calls and even text is also a large innovation for the watch. Cook called the way the device allows users to contact one another a “New intimate way to connect, directly from your wrist.” This is one of the features that distinguishes the watch from other watches and fitness trackers on the market. “The watch works seamlessly with the iPhone,” Cook said. The watch can sync up to your contacts, messages, and phone app allowing you to make calls and answer texts without ever touching your phone.

The ability to search the internet via Siri is another large step that the Apple Watch makes. “You can use Siri by just pressing the crown,” said Kevin Lynch, Vice President of Apple, “Then simply ask a question like what movies are playing in Cupertino today, and it comes back with a list of movies here in Cupertino.” Lynch demonstrated the ease with which the watch searched the internet and the ability to do so from your wrist is a very large step in the personal device industry.

The watch is starting at only $349 and will be released early next year. It will be compatible with both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5c. “This gives more than 200 million people access to Apple Watch,” said Cook.

“It empowers people and enriches their lives,” said Cook “The Apple watch is the most personal device Apple has ever created.”
