CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — Apple CEO announced the release of the company’s new product, the Apple Watch, at the Macworld Expo in Cupertino on Tuesday. The watch is the company’s take on standard watches and wrist-technology. With many customizable features, the new product brings the iPhone to your wrist.

With an emphasis on seamless improvements, Tim Cook calls this “The next chapter in Apple’s story.” The watch contains new-age technology that allows it to be a top-of-the-line fitness device, with an ability to track things such as heart rate and distance traveled, among others. This new technology allows a more intimate connection to others as well, with new features such as being able to tap the screen and send a vibration, send quick drawings, and even share your own heartbeat with other Apple Watch users.

On a typical watch you’d find a dial on the side to adjust the time. Apple took it a step further. The digital crown is not only used for adjusting the time, but it is also a multi-use home button and scroll wheel, and also a quick way to talk to Siri, allowing users to navigate their Apple Watch with ease.

Woman uses smart watch applications.
Amber Beech looks through the applications on her Apple Watch using the device’s digital crown. The watch emphasizes fitness apps, and encourages users to stay active.

Apple designed a new way of using force to navigate a touch screen, with sensors able to detect the difference between a light tap and a stronger push, creating many new avenues of navigation throughout the device. A sapphire sealing around the surface creates a shield to protect the device from harm while still being completely transparent and responsive to inputs.

The design of the wrist straps are also very customizable, as you can use a chemical and sweat resistant elastic band, a soft leather magnetic band, and a stainless-steel link or mesh bracelet, all with their own versions of an easy-to-use clasp or magnetic band that allows the user to put on and remove the watch with ease, with emphasis on it being comfortably secured to the users wrist. Each style comes with even more customizability, with a range of colors to choose from for each. Along with these, there is always the option for a slightly smaller version of the watch, with matching smaller straps as Apple understands that this is not a one-size-fits-all piece of technology.

Rhea Patel, an Indiana University student, uses her Apple Watch to make a phone call. The Apple Watch brings some of the capabilities of the iPhone to a wearable technology.

Apple introduced “glances” as an easy way to see the most important information at a “glance.” This feature includes being able to conveniently check a schedule, the time and weather, the user’s location, as well as information from third party applications. Users can quickly respond to texts with suggested responses, take calls, and adjust music all within seconds. The watch can be connected to any Apple product you choose, such as your iPhone, MacBook, and other Bluetooth devices like speakers or headphones.

Vibrations for notifications have been included as well. Users will feel a small vibration when they get push notifications. The vibration is unnoticeable or heard by anyone but the user. The watch can also give directions by simply vibrating on either side of the user’s wrist, indicating where to turn.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) – Tim Cook, on behalf of Apple, announced the new, revolutionary Apple Watch that was shown to seamlessly combine iOS features with life-efficiency upgrades all from the stainless steel, OLED watch screen.

First and foremost, the Apple Watch, which comes in two sizes, 38mm and 42mm, and has six different easily interchangeable watch band options. From leisurely leather and comfort, to sweat-proof silicone, the bands were created to easily fit in for all different lifestyles. Alongside the bands, there were more ways Apple created to personalize the watch. There are a variety of watch faces crafted to fit whatever the user is comfortable with; could be the time, an Apple produced watch face, or individually taken photos. Creating an efficient and usable watch that was aesthetically pleasing as well as highly-functional was a main goal of Apple’s that they seem to have accomplished.

Man holding writing pad on clipboard and pen, writing the times displayed on his Apple Watch stopwatch.
Speedway High School Cross Country coach, Brian Hunteman, records the times from his Apple Watch as his team completes a time-trial. The Apple Watch can be worn with the digital crown facing outwards or inwards to accommadate to the user’s needs.

“We’re using inductive charging. It has a magnet and it aligns perfectly to the back of the watch. It is so simple and elegant, it’s something only Apple could do”, said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. Starting at $349.00, this stainless steel watch was created with advanced technological innovations which incorporated iOS into the watch allowing for it to link to the iPhone.

The Apple Watch can be used for various purposes. With a touch screen, digital crown, and vibrations sent directly to your wrist, the Apple Watch built a seamless route for communication. Continued features from the iPhone such as iMessage, phone calls, and even social media communications have all been proven accessible from the watch and made it more convenient to communicate with people through speaking, typing, or automated responses without having to dig through a bag to unlock and respond from your iPhone. With apps such as digital touch, you can send and receive real-time drawings and even share something as intimate as your heart beat.

“It’s a new innovative, intimate way to communicate directly from your wrist. And it’s a comprehensive health and fitness device, and it is so much more”, Cook said.

With a screen this small, the watch could sense not just touch, but any force on the screen. The electrodes surrounding the screen can differentiate a tap and a press which controls the haptic feedback and vibrations being received from the Taptic engine. This is resulting from the single chip behind the screen which is producing a computer-like functioning watch.

Girl is using her Apple Watch to send a voice text message.
Indiana University student Ella Self uses the voice to text feature on her Apple Watch to send a text message. This feature allows users to quickly send a message without having to touch their phone.

Navigating through the watch, there are apps that come with it such as upgraded health features. The apps all show real-time data monitoring your heart rate, daily steps, and can track workouts. By showing a ring with movement, standing, and exercise times, it encourages people to close the rings and become more active, sending users activity reminders throughout the day.

With continuously developing technology and growing social media platforms, the Apple Watch integrates these applications into notifications. There are customizable vibrations for each app, message, and phone call. With just a quick wrist movement, Apple Watch users can access their Apple Wallet, Siri, the weather, and notification center. Apple incorporated a luxurious and systematic experience into a watch, upgrading one’s quality of life.

Although the watch may not have a camera, there are new camera improving features. The ability to take timer photos from your wrist will greatly improve timed selfies and save time.

Now, on Maps, it is possible to get vibration alerts on your wrist to help direct you. Walking, as well as driving, directions are visible as well to make it easier to navigate the area. “Now while you’re walking, Apple Watch will give you Taptic feedback on each turn, so you’ll know whether it’s time to turn left or to turn right and those feelings are different for each direction so you can actually know without even looking at your watch which way to go, it’s like having this invisible guide with you,” Cook said.

In a year’s time, the Apple Watch will be released to the public projecting a luxurious and life-altering way of living that will boost your exercise, health, and communication styles.

Kevin Lynch, Vice President of Apple, demonstrates how to use the photos app. Lynch also shows how the crown feature is being used.

Cook explains how the Apple Watch is not for a specific type of audience, it is for all. The Apple Watch is very versatile and can be customized.

CUPERTINO, California (Sept. 9, 2014) — Apple CEO, Tim Cook, announced the unveiling of the first ever Apple Watch at their annual developer’s conference on Tuesday, September 9th, in Cupertino, California.

The new watch, that will feature health and fitness, is expected to receive positive feedback. Cook confidently announced this new product with an innovative and detailed video highlighting its features. He highlighted abilities to track heart rates and activity levels, as well as demonstrating their customizable watch faces you can make uniquely your own. After the video was shown, Cook was beaming with delight while pumping his fist into the air with the new watch on his wrist. He left the audience buzzing with excitement after the announcement of this new product.

Paris Marshall uses the GPS setting on her Apple Watch as she walks to the Sample Gates at Indiana University. Marshall also uses one of the watch’s fitness features to track her steps daily.

After the introduction, Cook showed a video where Jony Ive, Vice President of Design, went further into explanation of the amazing features the Apple Watch offers. Ive goes on to explain the significance of every part of the Apple Watch. He explains the dial on the side of the watch, known as the Digital Crown, which is the main function for scrolling and zooming in and out on the watch. The Digital Crown was created on the watch, so the user does not have to cover up the screen when trying to use the device. Ive also mentions how accurate the watch is and how easy it is to use. Whether it be trying to send a text message or scroll through photos, the Apple Watch is simple to operate. The personalization of this watch is endless, whether it be with a colorful cool background or a sleek, modern watch band. “You can personalize both their appearance and their capabilities,” Ive said. The bands for the watch are easy to slide on and off and there are hundreds of different styles to choose from.

One of the most exciting things about this watch is the different capabilities it has. For example, the application options are endless on this Watch. Users are able to send messages and take calls just as you would on your iPhone. Not only this, but you are able to scroll through photos, look at notifications from third party apps, check the weather, play games, and more. However, one of the apps that is expected to stand out the most is the Fitness and Workout app. The Fitness application monitors your activity and movement throughout the day. The Workout app allows you to set goals with the workouts you do. Finally, this watch will have three different collections to choose from; such as the Watch, Watch Sport, and Watch Edition. “Creating beautiful objects as simple and pure as they are functional, well that’s always been our goal at Apple,” is the statement Ive leaves the audience with before Cook returns to the stage. Once again, after this video was shown, the audience was beaming with excitement and wonder about what all this watch truly has to offer.

Joey Bejin uses his new Apple Watch to track his heart rate during a workout. The watch’s numerous health and fitness features help Joey make workouts safe, effective, and fun.

A demo of this watch was then given by Kevin Lynch, Vice President, where he goes even further into detail about the capabilities and wondrous features the Apple Watch has to offer. Lynch shows users how to answer messages and how to use the digital crown (the dial on the side of the watch). He even shows how with a simple click of the button that is located on the side of the watch, you can send live messages to people in your contacts. Along with this, he mentions how Siri is already built into the watch and how they are also working with third party companies to make apps that will be compatible with the Apple Watch. After Lynch is done with his demonstration, Cook returns back on to the stage.

As in closing, Cook brings up the “important details”. He mentions how this device is only compatible with the Apple iPhone. The Apple Watch will work with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, and the iPhone 5. The watch will not work with other brands of smartphones. The price is also revealed for this product, at a starting price of $349. Cook does not give a definitive date on when the Apple Watch will be released, but he says how it will be available early next year, and it is worth the wait. Cook reveals that much time, and effort was spent on this product and how he and everyone else that worked on it are so excited for the future of it. “It is something functional, yet incredibly beautiful,” Tim Cook said. “It empowers people and enriches their lives.”

The last feature allows the watch to tell the difference between a light tap and a harder press so it can react accordingly.

One problem that Apple assessed during the creation of this product was navigation. The developers could not just shrink down the iPhone interface and put it on the watch. Therefore, they built the Digital Crown on the side of the watch for minimal screen blocking. This dial is a staple on most traditional watches, but Apple has more digital uses such as zooming, opening apps, and using Siri.

Storage is yet another necessary aspect of the Apple Watch. With 8 GB of storage, customers can use all of their favorite applications. Those who value music can store up to 2 GB worth of songs while utilizing Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to headphones. The device also offers 75 MB for photos that can double as display backgrounds. If storage ever needs to be freed up, users can always delete apps, photos, and songs that they do not need saved anymore.

Finally, Apple Watch is supported by not only the iPhone 6, but the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s. With 29 available languages to choose from, this product can be widely used around the world. This product has many features that allow it to adapt to consumers. “We think people are going to love to use the Apple Watch,” Tim Cook said. “It is something functional, yet incredibly beautiful.” Combining customization and wearable technology to enrich lives is why Apple made this device.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, explains how the Apple Watch is a product that will seamlessly integrate into the lives of consumers. He believes that this innovative device will redefine the watch category.

“Apple Watch is the most personal device we set out to make,” Tim Cook said during the press release of this device.

In the press release, Tim Cook happily informs audiences of the fresh innovations of the Apple Watch. This new technology will make using Apple products exponentially easier for users.

The new Apple Watch is innovative. The inclusion of the digital crown on the side of the watch allows for users to have easy access without disrupting their view of the screen. The button underneath the digital crown can be used for easy access to contacts, making the Apple Watch extremely accessible.
