Uber drivers In Bloomington are saying that numerous Greek life students are breaking Quarantine and taking Uber rides to various places across Bloomington. According to the Uber drivers these students are sneaking out in the middle of the night to go to bars, night clubs, other fraternities, other sororities etc. The students are supposed to stay isolated in their houses until the quarantine period is over, but many have not followed that directive. Uber Driver Anthony Keene has had numerous students request to be picked up from one of these locations. “It kind of makes me upset that some of these students just don’t care who they transfer it to,” said Keene.
Anthony Keene describes the Uber situation.
Uber drivers like Anthony Keene are combatting this issue by refusing to do pickups at any and all quarantine housing. This did little to stop the students from sneaking out for they found a way to get around it according to Keene. “They would be on the quarantine list they’d walk up to the corner of 17th and Jordan or even walk to Bart Kauffman field to be picked up because if It’s not from that address we don’t know,” said Keene. These students are now leaving the quarantine housing and going to other locations nearby in order to get picked up. The Uber drivers are picking these students up because they have no idea where they originally came from. The Uber drivers say that while the issue started at the beginning of the year, it is still happening even though there are less Greek houses under quarantine than there were originally.
While the Greek houses are the majority of the problem, according to Bloomington Uber drivers there are also a number of students leaving quarantine at Ashton residence and requesting Uber rides. Ashton Residence Hall is being used by IU as the place where they send students who test positive for COVID-19 or students who are first person contacts. The Uber drivers report that the students leave from this hall often and students who have lived in Ashton quarantine say that there is no one preventing them from leaving. Uber drivers like Anthony Keene say that these students seem to have no regard for other people.
“They have no remorse. You know I mean I’ve had people that gotten in my car and bragged that they’ve had COVID-19. You know and immediately I say get out. You know I’m sorry. I personally am not worried about it, but I worry about taking it back to my family, my grandkids,” Said Keene.
While this problem is still occurring IU, officials are condemning the actions of these students and IU spokesman Chuck Carney detailed how IU feels about this situation.
“Because again it’s simply a violation of quarantine. If somebody’s supposed to be in quarantine that’s where they’re supposed to be. Not only for their own health but for the health of others. So, we need them to take that seriously and if they don’t, we certainly will take it seriously and we will take action,” said Carney.
IU is leaving it up to these students to make the right choice for Chuck Carney emphasized that these students are adults and should act accordingly and follow COVID-19 regulations and stay in Quarantine.
