There is extra IU pride in the air in Bloomington this Fall, thanks to the No. 5 ranked Hoosiers football team.
Indiana Football is currently 10-0. This is the first time in program history that the Hoosiers have gone undefeated for 10 straight games.
Bloomington has hosted ESPN College Gameday, Fox Sports Big Noon Kickoff and Barstool Sports this season. The extra attention and coverage given to IU athletics this fall is free advertising for the university.
This is also the first football season since the Big Ten Conference Expansion, which added West Coast schools University of California – Los Angeles, University of California – Southern California, University of Oregon and University of Washington to the conference.
Ann Bastianelli, Teaching Professor of Marketing in the Kelley School of Business estimates an economic impact of $280,000 for routine home games. For a bigger game, like homecoming, Bastianelli estimates economic impact can be double that of a routine home game.
Bastianelli said that most of this money comes from tourism, such as hotels, restaurants and merchandising.
In an interview with 95.3 MNC, chair of Tourism, Event & Sport Management Department at IU Indianapolis, David Pierce said 65% and 75% of ticket holders come from out of town, which yields about 45,000 more people who are visiting Bloomington this year than if the team was struggling or just average.
University donors also like it when their team is winning. More funds can also get the attention of potential recruits.
Home games at Memorial Stadium are sold out for the rest of the season.
The Hoosiers will travel to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes this Saturday, November 23 at noon. Finally, Indiana will play Purdue in the Old Oaken Bucket at home on Saturday, November 30. The time for this rivalry game has not been announced yet.
