The IU men’s soccer team scored big last weekend at the Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers earned the “Big Ten Double.”
The Hoosiers shut out Michigan 3-0 in the championship game to earn the tournament title. Having already won the regular season this year, the team also earned the “Big Ten Double.” The tournament title was the 13th overall win in the program’s history, but the “Big Ten Double” was the first in over 12 years for IU men’s soccer. Senior Andrew Gutman says the program has a long history of championships, but earning the “Big Ten Double” was a huge accomplishment for his senior year. “This was something very few teams have done,” Gutman said. “That makes it extra special, especially for the seniors that left their mark on the program.”
The IU men’s soccer team will compete over the next month in the NCAA soccer tournament. After winning the “Big Ten Double”, Gutman says the team’s goal for the season is now even bigger. “If we don’t win the national championship, then to us, it’s a failure in the season,” Gutman said. “I think that speaks to how high of a standard we have for ourselves.”
The IU men’s soccer team faces the University of Connecticut Monday at 12 PM in Bloomington.
