IU Student Government and IU Health Center Give Out Free Helmets To Students

Indiana University Student Government and the IU Health Center kicked off scooter safety week with a free helmet giveaway for students.

IUSG members set up stations at the busiest intersections on campus at 10th and Fee Lane and at the Woodburn Clock Tower to give out 100 free helmets to students.

IUSG freshman intern, Harrison Knable, says they hope this giveaway will create a snowball effect to increase scooter safety across campus.

“There is a stigma of helmets being “uncool”. So, if we are able to simply get the optics out on campus of riders wearing the helmets, then hopefully more and more students will see these helmets and decide to get their own,” said Knable.

Bird and Lime, popular scooter companies here on campus donated the helmets to IUSG to assist with the scooter safety initiative.

IU Student Government hopes to accomplish two goals with this scooter initiative.

They would like to inform the student body about the importance of the necessity of wearing a helmet while riding scooters and inject a supply of helmets into the student population.

The giveaway started at 3 p.m. and all the helmets were gone in less than an hour.

IUSG Vice President, Maggie Hopkins, says that was faster than they expected.

IU Student Government plans to host another giveaway at a later date.
