Many students were wondering where an IU Notify alert was after a shooting Sunday morning at the corner of Grant Street and Smith Avenue. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at a university owned rental home.
When IUPD arrived on scene, the only known suspect was taken into custody just minutes after the incident occurred.
20-year-old Gabriel Alsman was taken into custody. He has since posted bond and no longer in custody.

IUPD was made aware of a second suspect at large after sending a press release describing the incident.
IU has a system for deciding when notifications should be sent to students to alert them about dangerous situations. IU officials say this particular situation did not qualify for a notification to be sent. Alerts are only sent if IU faculty and students need to take immediate action to protect themselves or if the threat is moving towards campus. There are three different types of alerts that are sent out; emergency alerts, crime notices, and public safety advisory.
IU Superintendent of Public Safety, Benjamin Hunter, told IU NewsNet that IUPD will be working with IU Student Government (IUSG) to discuss other options of alerting students of dangerous situations near campus.
Hunter says the IU community can follow IUPD social media accounts for consistent updates.
