This year was the 32nd running of the Women’s Little 500 bike race. But for senior Lauren Britt, it would be her last time circling the track of the Bill Armstrong stadium. She’s the captain of the Teter Cycling team and finished her time on the team by being the first to cross the Little 500 finish line.
For Teter, a significant chunk of the 100 laps needed to complete the race was spent playing catch up with the third place finishing team, SKI, after they found themselves a half-lap behind. Teter closed that gap and won, but only by less than a second, with Delta Gamma bike team immediately following.
Britt describes the conclusion of the race as,”a dream come true, it’s a dream come true, and it was. I’ve been on the team for three years now and it’s been a vision of winning the race since I joined my sophomore year, and when it happened it just didn’t feel real. I think I was in shock, but in a very good way. ”
Though Teter will be without Britt next year, they don’t plan on compromising the winning title, and are excited to be able to sport the yellow jersey, the color that the winning team is awarded in the following year. And as for next year, the women’s race has the potential to be doubled in length-to 200 laps, the same as the men’s race. There is an online petition that has sparked up debate about whether or not the women’s and men’s races should be the same length.
