It was rare to catch Paul Loggan without his mustache and a big smile right underneath it.
After finishing college, Loggan started growing out his mustache. When his players begged him to shave it, he said he would — once they won a state championship. His kind heart, humor and commitment to high school athletics will be part of his all-encompassing legacy.
North Central High School athletic director Paul Loggan passed away from complications of COVID-19 on Easter Sunday. The 57-year-old was on a ventilator since April 1st.
Loggan attended an Indiana high school basketball sectionals game on March 6, a week before the NBA suspended their season. In the month following, five attendees of that sectionals contest passed away from COVID-19. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when he caught the virus, Loggan’s family believes it was at that basketball game.
Loggan held various positions at North Central High School throughout his 32 years at the school, ranging from P.E. teacher to football coach to Athletic Director. His students say he made an impact in every role.
His reach did not end at North Central. Loggan was past-president of the Indiana Football Coaches Association, game director of the North/South All-Star game, and a member of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Association. He was a leader within Indiana high school football operations. Additionally, he was part of the University of Indianapolis Athletics Hall of Fame.
His dedication and genuine care for high school athletics was as big as his heart. Student athletes were not just a name on a roster or a number on the field. They were human beings deserving of the time, attention and resources to become the best they can be. From praise after a win, to words of encouragement after a loss, Loggan was always ready to support his athletes.
Whether it was a football sectional championship on a rainy day or a soccer scrimmage in the blistering heat, Loggan would always pull up on his golf cart to any sporting event ready to support student athletes.
Witnessing his father have such an impact on student athletes has encouraged University of Indianapolis sophomore Will Loggan to follow in his fathers footsteps and become an Athletic Director. Will is currently majoring in sports marketing and plans to get his masters degree in athletic administration, just like his father.
“The positive impact he had on everybody, that is what I want to have.” Loggan said.
