Three years ago on February 13, 2017, it was an abnormally warm day, especially for winter. It was a built-in snow day for Delphi Community Middle School and best friends Abby Williams and Libby German decided to spend the day outdoors, hiking at the Delphi Historic Trails. What nobody knew, however, was that they would not return home alive. The girls went missing on that Monday afternoon, and weren’t found until the next day. Their bodies were discovered by volunteers searching in woods about a mile east of the trails.
Three years later on the anniversary of their death, answers to who their killer is remain unsolved. This is uncommon for a case with so much evidence. Thanks to Libby German’s phone that was discovered at the scene, police have photos, video, and audio belonging to the possible killer. The audio clip released by police contains the cryptic phrase, “Guys…Down the hill.” On last year’s anniversary there was a press conference that revealed new information relating to the killer. An additional press conference in April released a brand new sketch as well as a longer audio clip. This year, there was no press conference, as there was not more information to release to the public.
The new sketch released in April is completely different from the first sketch initially released. The image depicts a younger looking, more clean shaven man. Police believe their suspect is between the ages of 18 and 4o but appears younger, and is also believed to have lived, worked, or frequently visited the Delphi area. There is a $225,000 dollar reward for any tips leading to the arrest of the killer.
Abby’s mother Anna remains hopeful that closure will come, but tries not to focus on the unknown. “It’s been three years, we thought we’d be done with this by now, we thought this would be over, everyone thought this would be over but it’s not. There’s not a whole lot you can do about that and again dwelling on what I don’t know isn’t going to change the outcome.” She now devotes a lot of time in working on building a memorial park for the girls. The 20 acre park will feature three ball fields, two parks and one amphitheater.
