Everything must come to end, and that includes the college years. Graduation is the first weekend in May at Indiana University and the senior class of 2019 is getting ready to say their goodbyes and go out into the real world. Some seniors will be employed immediately after graduation, some are going onto graduate school to pursue a master’s degree, and others will live at home to save money and pay off student loans. However, there are some seniors preparing to move the new cities across the United States and the world to pursue the career of their dreams.
IU senior Andrea Hill is moving to New York City to work at Tiffany and Company, which she says has been her dream job for as long as she can remember. She will be working in procurement, buying and merchandising. She will work with buyers and suppliers for diamonds and jewelry and do financial analysis, making sure orders go smoothly.https://www.tiffany.com
Andrea created a portfolio and flew to Manhattan for interviews and says she was thrilled to get the offer.
The hardest challenge Andrea thinks she will have to face is adjusting to life in a big city. The suburbs is all she’s ever known and Manhattan, she says, moves at a much faster pace than small town Indiana. She says her years at IU have helped her mature as she learned, preparing her for the job.
IU senior Mina Shirazi is moving even further after graduation. The speech and hearing sciences major is moving to Israel to participate in the Masa Teaching Fellows Program where she will teach English to children and pursue a certificate to teach Hebrew.http://www.israelteachingfellows.org
Shirazi previously did an internship in Israel where she lived in Jerusalem and worked with victims of terrorist attacks. She worked with three families on a weekly basis, acting as a helper for them. Some of her tasks included helping clean the house, watching the children and making meals. One of the kids she worked with had lost his leg in a terrorist attack when he was 1-year-old and after that experience, Shirazi realized she wanted to come back and help other children like him.https://www.birthrightisrael.com
Both soon-to-be-graduates says they are grateful for everything IU has given them. They say the memories and the friends they have made will last forever even if college does not. The saying “when one door closes, another one opens” is coming true for both young women as they journey off to live and work outside of their comfort zones to start the next chapter of their lives.
Indiana’s undergraduate spring commencement ceremony will take place on May 4th in Memorial Stadium. https://commencement.indiana.edu/about/spring-commencement/index.html
