Lessons from ZGroup

The excitement of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles is powerful. I’m experiencing that firsthand at my internship at ZGroup, a talent booking agency, where I’ve learned new skills and insights about talent representation.

One lesson I’ve learned at my internship is to have persistence — I often have to email clients and keep track of all events going on. One of the first things I learned was to follow up, every day. I know that doesn’t sound too difficult, but one of my responsibilities includes searching for new contacts at venues, sports teams and nightclubs. This can be a tedious process, and it’s critical that I act with professionalism, follow up and find the correct person within the company. This has also improved my skills of being social in a work environment and establishing business relationships with people.

A talent agency requires professionalism, but it’s also important to be up-to-date with cultural trends. Social media has become a mass marketing tool, and I’ve seen how important it is that a company has an interactive online presence. I’ve gained experience tracking social media analytics, and I’ve also learned about marketing, because ZGroup specializes in marketing for events. My internship allows me to be creative with graphic design by designing one-sheets (biographies), PowerPoints, social media posts, fliers and website ideas.

I even got invited to a Grammys after-party through my internship. It was a formal event in a Hollywood Hills mansion with exquisite decoration, live music, a few celebrities — including Diplo — and a catered pizza truck.

This internship has granted me a new perspective, as well as important skills that will further my career in the entertainment industry.
