Making connections in L.A.

I never thought a semester in Los Angeles would be something I’d be able to experience. Since I’ve been here, I’ve gotten to know and connect with some of the best people.

The first exciting moment I enjoyed was being a part of my internship, which gave me experience in an industry I was clueless in. I really appreciate my supervisor for taking a chance on all of his interns, since a lot of businesses require you to have experience before being hired. This was different — my supervisor actually wanted to be the one to give us the experience we might need to get our foot in the door.

As far as the public relations work we do in the office, I don’t think it would be something I could do for the long run. Since my supervisor knew I was more into fashion and modeling (I have my own clothing brand), he offered me a different experience. He represents many clothing brands, so in exchange for good clothing content, I received the clothing that they gift celebrities and influencers.

Taking the challenge, I borrowed everything I loved from the racks and a camera from my friend, and I took a trip to the beach. It was hard to come up with the hairstyle I wanted for the look, because I wanted to be different with the clothing style. The shoot lasted about two hours with changing clothes and trying to get the best angles.

Another incredible experience I had was outside of my internships. One day while walking on Melrose, some friends and I met a couple gentlemen who owned their own pop-up shop. Nothing really happened that day, but a couple weeks later, I followed one of them on Instagram. When he followed me back, he reached out with a direct message.

From there, I took the initiative to let him know I model and that if he ever needed a muse, I could be the perfect fit for his clothing’s vibe. From there, we set up a meeting to come up with dates and times that worked for everyone.

Although they seemed really cool, I was nervous on the day of the shoot, because I had just met them. We went to the Runyon Trail to a rocky spot that allowed them to capture the entire city. The view was immaculate. We worked on varied shots with different clothing and people.

We even met some of their friends who they invited to the shoot to help out as well. With everyone clicking right away, we decided to all go out to eat together and continue our night.

I was proud of myself for getting the gig. The clothing brand was high-end, and celebrities visit to buy from them all the time. So I was definitely excited to be a part of something like this. I appreciate this experience, because in L.A. it is very easy to talk to anyone, run into anyone and most importantly connect.
