Reflections
This alternative break trip taught senior Abigail Billing about production, fieldwork, client communication and U.S. history.
Today was day four here in South Carolina, and we left our Columbia home and headed over to Charleston.
We had to say goodbye to our Congaree adventure and present our rough cuts to Greg and the other rangers. They were so sweet and excited to see everything. I loved seeing what everyone else was working on and getting to hear the feedback on my own stuff as well.
We had three main topics: safety, the Fireflies Festival and controlled fires. My team focused on the safety video, so I hadn’t really gotten a chance to see what everyone else had done yet. It was sad leaving, because Congaree is one of the most beautiful forests I have ever been to. The trees were so tall and majestic, and I loved being out in nature so much.
After a long car ride, we finally made it to Charleston. We stopped at a trendy deli to eat and then headed over to Fort Sumter to meet our new park rangers.
When we arrived at the fort’s visitor center, we met Paula. I’m in charge of producing one of the videos for this park, so it was great to get some more information on the topic my team and I are covering. I am covering the evolution of the fort, and after talking to her, I have a much clearer idea of what they’re looking for.
We went grocery shopping and ate Mexican to end the night off right and got a chance to do some team bonding. There was of course editing of our rough cuts and a look at some of our new footage. Tomorrow we will spend the whole day at the fort, so we all decided to turn in early tonight.
