Reflections
This alternative break trip taught senior Abigail Billing about production, fieldwork, client communication and U.S. history.
Today we woke up later than usual, around 9 a.m., and spent the morning editing our Fort Sumter projects and finishing our Congaree National Park projects. We edited until midday and then went to Fort Sumter to show our videos to Ranger Paula and get feedback from her and other rangers.
For the whole trip up until this point, we’ve had a pretty steady schedule of waking up early to go to national parks, getting b-roll, going back to our place and editing during the evening. A schedule like that can get really repetitive and tiresome, so we decided that today we would go to the beach.
After our trip to Fort Sumter, we all headed to the beach and had a fun and relaxing time, and cleared our minds and decompressed. A lot of us went into the water to swim and play games. Alexa noticed a jellyfish in the water near us, which really scared us and led to the end of our time in the water.
It was OK though, because we relaxed on the sand and just talked and planned future times we will hang out with each other. After the beach, we decided to go get dinner at a nearby restaurant that specializes in seafood.
Looking back on today, you appreciate trips like these because you get the chance to get to know people who are in your same field but who you might have never met otherwise. You also learn and share opportunities that people will benefit from.
